RE: The tariff classification of J Acid (6-amino-1-naphthol-3-sulfonic acid), and Beta Naphthol from China.

Dear Ms. Lee:

In your letter dated October 6, 1989, you requested a tariff classification ruling.

The applicable subheading for the J Acid (6-amino-1-naphthol-3-sulfonic acid will be 2922.21.1000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for oxygen-function amino compounds: amino-naphthols and other amino-phenols: 6-amino-1-naphthol-3- sulfonic acid. The rate of duty will be 5.8 percent ad valorem.

The applicable subheading for the Beta Naphthol will be 2907.15.5000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for phenols; phenol-alcohols: monophenols: other naphthols and their salts. The rate of duty will be 20 percent ad valorem.

Duties on both the J Acid (6-amino-1-naphthol-3-sulfonic acid and the Beta Naphthol have been temporarily suspended under subheadings 9902.29.34 and 9902.29.08 respectively.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Section 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177). A copy of this ruling letter should be attached to the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If the documents have been filed without a copy, this ruling should be brought to the attention of the Customs officer handling the transaction.
