RE: The tariff classification of a clothes carrier from China

Dear Ms. Jewett:

In your letter dated June 9, 2006, you requested a tariff classification ruling.

The merchandise is called the “Car Clothes Carrier.” It is a hanger-like article made of steel. It has a swivel hook that is designed to be hung from the garment hook in a vehicle. It multiplies the garment hook capacity by enabling several clothes hangers to be hung from it. It also enables garments to be carried to and from a car in an easy, convenient manner. It measures 4-1/4 inches by 6.5 inches overall.

The applicable subheading for the car clothes carrier will be 8302.30.3060, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS), which provides for base metal mountings, fittings and similar articlesother mountings, fittings and similar articles suitable for motor vehicles; and parts thereof, of iron or steel, of aluminum or of zinc, other. The rate of duty will be 2 percent ad valorem.

Duty rates are provided for your convenience and are subject to change. The text of the most recent HTSUS and the accompanying duty rates are provided on World Wide Web at http://www.usitc.gov/tata/hts/.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).

A copy of the ruling or the control number indicated above should be provided with the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If you have any questions regarding the ruling, contact National Import Specialist Barbara Kaiser at 646-733-3024.
