RE: The Tariff Classification of A Caller ID Unit from Taiwan.

Dear Mr. Rodriquez:

In your letter dated March 13, 2000, you requested a tariff classification ruling.

The Caller ID unit, item #W-17-J-I444, is a device that displays the telephone number of a calling party on a liquid crystal display (LCD). The unit plugs into a standard telephone modular wall jack. A coded representation of the calling party's telephone number is sent on the telephone line to the unit, where the caller's telephone number is displayed. The caller's number is also stored in chip memory so that the user can review the information at a later date. The Caller ID has a 3-line display, a memory capacity for 77 numbers and can display either in English, French or Spanish.

The Caller ID unit, item #W-17-J-I444, is classifiable in subheading 8531.20.0020, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for visual signaling apparatus: indicator panels incorporating liquid crystal devices (LCD’s). The rate of duty is Free.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).

A copy of the ruling or the control number indicated above should be provided with the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If you have any questions regarding the ruling, contact National Import Specialist David Curran at 212-637-7049.

Sincerely,
