RE: The tariff classification of metalized strip from India

Dear Mr. Mark:

In your letter dated February 28, 2000, you requested a tariff classification ruling on behalf of Markbilt.

You submitted samples of two items you called “ribbons”. They are actually textile strips. You state that they are made of 99 percent polyester and 1 percent aluminum to create the metalized coating. The strip measures .379 mm wide. It will be used in knitting applications.

The applicable subheading for the metalized strip will be 5605.00.1000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for metalized yarn, metal coated or metal laminated man-made filament or strip or the like, ungimped, and untwisted or with twist of less than 5 turns per meter. The rate of duty will be 10.5 percent ad valorem.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).

A copy of the ruling or the control number indicated above should be provided with the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If you have any questions regarding the ruling, contact National Import Specialist Camille Ferraro at 212-637-7086.

Sincerely,

Robert B. Swierupski
