RE: The tariff classification of a carpenter’s belt from China

Dear Mr. Parsons:

In your letter dated May 11, 1999 you requested a tariff classification ruling. Your sample will be returned to you as requested.

The item submitted is a carpenter’s belt for organizing and separating out tools, featuring pockets and sleeves for tools of varying shapes and sizes. The sample provided measures 10” X 22” and has fabric ties for attaching to a bucket or tying around the waist. The carpenter’s belt will be made of cotton canvas, or man-made fiber fabric, or plastic sheeting. We do not have enough information to provide classification advice on the plastic sheeting version. Please provide a sample of this version for a separate ruling.

The applicable subheading for the carpenter’s belt in cotton canvas or man-made fiber fabric will be 6307.90.9989, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for other made up articles...Other. The rate of duty will be 7 percent ad valorem.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Section 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).

A copy of the ruling or the control number indicated above should be provided with the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported.

Sincerely,

Alice M. Rigdon
Port Director
