RE: The tariff classification of raft fittings from Taiwan

Dear Mr. Gomez:

In your letter dated March 17, 1999, on behalf of Northwest River Supplies, Inc., you requested a tariff classification ruling.

The sample you submitted is a fitting for a river raft. The fitting consists of a stainless steel D-ring, 2 1/2 inches [7 cm] in diameter, permanently secured to a rubber/textile patch, 6 inches [15.5 cm] in diameter. The fittings will be glued to the raft as tie-down points.

You also request the classification of a variety of accessories. Your inquiry does not provide enough information for us to give a classification ruling on such general classes of merchandise. Your request for a classification ruling should include information on each item such as you have provided for this one.

The applicable subheading for the raft fitting will be 8302.49.6055, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for base metal mountings, fittings and similar articles suitable for furniture, doors, staircases, windows, blinds, coachwork, saddlery, trunks, chests, caskets or the like, other mountings, fittings and similar articles, other, other, of iron or steel of aluminum or of zinc, other, for railway vehicles, aircraft, vessels and other vehicles. The rate of duty will be 5.7 percent ad valorem.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).

A copy of the ruling or the control number indicated above should be provided with the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If you have any questions regarding the ruling, contact National Import Specialist James Smyth at 212-637-7008.

Sincerely,

Robert B. Swierupski
