RE: The tariff classification of a typesetter engine from Japan

Dear Ms. Anderson:

In your letter dated November 6, 1992 you requested a tariff classification ruling.

The LaserMaster Unity 1200XL Plain-Paper Typesetter is a powerful laser printer that has PostScript-language interpreter and 135 Type 1 typefaces pre-installed on its own internal hard disk. Thus, from the moment you plug it in, it is ready to print camera-ready copy for an entire computer network. Its dot resolution of 1200 x 1200 provides the crisp text and sharp graphics required for the production of acceptable printing plates with its paper product. Besides the 135 pre-installed typefaces, the Unity 1200XL hard disk provides enough space for over 250 additional typefaces.

You will import only the Unity 1200 XL's laser elecrographic print engine. The controller will be domestically produced.

The applicable subheading for the print engine of the LaserMaster Unity 1200XL Plain Paper Typesetter will be 8442.40.0000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for parts of other machinery, apparatus and equipment for typefounding or typesetting. This provision is free of duty.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Section 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).

A copy of this ruling letter should be attached to the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If the documents have been filed without a copy, this ruling should be brought to the attention of the Customs officer handling the transaction.

Sincerely,

Jean F. Maguire
Area Director
