RE: The country-of origin marking of safes from Swaziland.

Dear Mr. Donahue:

In your letter dated January 3, 1991, you requested a ruling on country- of-origin marking.

The merchandise is a safe, made in Swaziland with a combination lock made in the United States. The lock shows a U.S. address. You intend to import these safes with a sturdy, adhesive metal label bearing the legend "Safe made in Swaziland/Lock made in U.S.A." located on the upper left-hand side of the door of the safe. Since the label is on the same side of the door as the lock, and since it is common in the trade to place labels and other such information away from the locking mechanism, the label will be considered in sufficient juxtaposition with the U.S. address. Your intended marking will satisfy the requirements of Section 304.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Section 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).

A copy of this ruling letter should be attached to the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If the documents have been filed without a copy, this ruling should be brought to the attention of the Customs officer handling the transaction.

Sincerely,

Jean F. Maguire
Area Director
