RE: The tariff classification of carriage bolts from Taiwan.

Dear Mr. Golden:

This is in response to your request for a tariff classification ruling dated January 29, 1997.

The submitted samples are fasteners of the same design, but of different lengths and diameters. The widest has a shank diameter of 7/16 of an inch. The narrowest is 3/16 of an inch in diameter. All of the fasteners have round heads, square under-heads, flat points, and are threaded along the total length of the shank. These fasteners are commonly known as carriage bolts.

The applicable subheading for the submitted fasteners which have shanks under 6mm in diameter will be 7318.15.2010, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for Bolts and bolts and their nuts or washers entered or exported in the same shipment: Having shanks or threads with a diameter of less than 6 mm. The rate of duty will be .3 percent ad valorem.

The applicable subheading for the submitted fasteners which have shanks 6mm or more in diameter will be 7318.15.2050, HTS, which provides for Bolts and bolts and their nuts or washers entered or exported in the same shipment: Having shanks or threads with a diameter of 6 mm or more: Other: With round heads. The rate of duty will be .3 percent ad valorem.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).

A copy of the ruling or the control number indicated above should be provided with the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If you have any questions regarding the ruling, contact National Import Specialist Kathy Campanelli at 212-466-5492.
