RE: The tariff classification of a combination washer/dryer from Italy.

Dear Ms. Hurd:

In your letter dated September 30, 1996, on behalf of Marine Appliances International, you requested a tariff classification ruling.

The merchandise under consideration involves 2 models of a combination household washer and dryer, model WDB-1043, a large capacity combo, and model WDS-1043, a compact combo. Both machines are designed to fit into a compact space. The machines are capable of performing five wash programs and each model incorporates a stainless steel drum and tub. The large capacity unit fits into a space 23 3/8 inches in width and 22 inches in depth and the compact unit fits into a space 23 3/8 inches in width and 17 1/2 inches in depth. Both models are totally automatic from wash through dry cycle, and each spins at either 1000 R.P.M. or 500 R.P.M. The dryers feature a half-heat setting for delicate fabrics, full heat for regular garments and a cool down segment for both. The dryers are vent-free and are basically tumble-dry units. The large capacity combo has a wash capacity of 11 pounds, and a wash through dry capacity of 8 pounds. The compact combo has a wash capacity of 10 pounds, and a wash through dry capacity of 6 pounds.

The applicable subheading for the combination washer/dryer will be 8450.11.0080, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for fully automatic household or laundry type washing machines, each of a dry linen capacity not exceeding 10 kg, including machines which both wash and dry. The rate of duty will be 2.2 percent ad valorem.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).

A copy of the ruling or the control number indicated above should be provided with the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If you have any questions regarding the ruling, contact National Import Specialist Robert Losche at 212-466-5670.
