RE: The tariff classification of roller screws from Switzerland

Dear Ms. Peiffer:

In your letter dated March 9, 1996, on behalf of your client, Exlar Corporation, you requested a tariff classification ruling.

The items at issue are various styles of roller screws: non-recirculating, ground screw thread; non-recirculating, rolled screw thread; and recirculating, round screw thread. A roller screw is a mechanism for converting rotary torque into linear motion, in a similar manner as acme screws or ball screws. The difference is in the rollers screw's design for transmitting forces. Multiple threaded helical rollers are assembled in a planetary arrangement around a threaded shaft (refer to picture), which converts a drive motor's rotary motion into linear motion of either the shaft or nut.

The applicable subheading for the roller screws will be 8483.40.8000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for ball or roller screws. The rate of duty will be 4.9 percent ad valorem.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).

A copy of the ruling or the control number indicated above should be provided with the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If you have any questions regarding the ruling, contact National Import Specialist Karl J. Riedl at 212-466-5493.

Sincerely,

Roger J. Silvestri
