RE: The tariff classification of Interfire 633 Optical Test Interferometers from Great Britain

Dear Ms. Schneider:

In your letter dated November 14, 1995, on behalf of Advance Glass Industries, you requested a tariff classification ruling.

The Interfire 633 optical test interferometer is a precision, non-contact instrument used to measure optical quality plano and spherical surfaces and to measure the optical performance of complete lens assemblies and windows. The light source is a helium-neon laser operating at the wavelength of 632.8 nanometers. According to your letter, the Interfire 633 does not measure refractive indices.

The applicable subheading for the Interfire 633 optical test interferometer will be 9031.40.9000, Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for measuring or checking instruments, appliances and machines, not specified or included elsewhere in this chapter; other optical instruments and appliances, other. The rate of duty will be 8.7 percent ad valorem.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Section 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).
