RE: The tariff classification of molds from Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan

Dear Mr. Pickert:

In your letter dated October 24, 1995 you requested a tariff classification ruling.

The injection type molds will be used in injection molding machines for the production of thermoplastic components. They are typically made from metal such as steel or aluminum.

The applicable subheading for the injection type molds will be 8480.71.9010, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for Molding boxes for metal foundry; mold bases; molding patterns; molds for metal (other than ingot molds), metal carbides, glass, mineral materials, rubber or plastics: Molds for rubber or plastics: Injection or compression types: Other... Injection type... . The duty rate will be 3.7 percent ad valorem.

Your inquiry does not provide enough information for us to give a classification ruling on neither the plastic components nor the plastic resin. Your request for a classification ruling on the plastic components should include: (1) listing of components by specific name/description/model number, (2) information as to how and where each specific component will be used, (3) brochures/blueprints/specifications on the machines/appliances in which these components will be used and (4) samples (if practical). Your request for a classification ruling on the plastic resin should include: (1) the chemical name, CAS Registry number, and percentage composition by weight of each ingredient making up the resin, (2) the submission of the MSDS sheets and any/all other available technical literature on the resin and (3) information as to form (e.g., pellets, flakes, powder, etc.) of resin at time of importation.

This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Section 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).

A copy of the ruling or the control number indicated above should be provided with the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If you have any questions regarding the ruling, contact National Import Specialist Robert Losche at 212-466-5670.

Sincerely,

Roger J. Silvestri
Director
