The Makita seven and one quarter inch magnesium circular bench saw is a tough but lightweight saw that can make light work of a number of heavy jobs. Weighing just 10.1 lbs, it has a powerful 2,300 Watt motor that gives both power and durability to this portable tool. The carbide-tipped ultra coated blade is tough enough to cut through the finest quality hard woods, but the blade does wear out quickly. However, at least the blade wrench is attached to the saw for ease of changing.

Because of its portability, it is necessary to use this bench saw on a sturdy work horse with a vise or guides to hold the wood in place. I own this model and I've noticed that the power of the motor can sometimes send the wood sliding off in some direction if not anchored securely. The maximum capacity of the cut is two and one half inches at 90 degrees and bevels at 56 degrees with stops at 22.5 degrees and 45 degrees--this is sufficient functionality for most home improvement jobs, especially with a MSRP of just $159.99.

The built-in L.E.D light that illuminates the area you are cutting is a neat feature, as is the built-in dust blower that clears the site so you can keep to a line. I like the fact that the settings, numbers and ruler markings are over-sized to make them easy to read.

One of the things I don't like about this bench saw is that it can get very hot during a long cut and sometimes the blade seems to be resisting the direction of a cut. I'm think this is when there are knots in the wood, because I have even had the saw spring back toward me during a cut, which was a little unnerving and made it difficult to re-start at the same point. My advice to any novice using this piece of equipment would be to remember to use gloves and protective eyewear.
