General Electric 19 Cubic Ft. Chest Freezer
The General Electric 19 Cubic Foot Chest Freezer was purchased by our family about seven years ago, for around $550 dollars. Today the manufacturer's price is listed at $749 dollars. This model is a manual defrost, which means we have to defrost it ourselves, usually at least twice a year.
Several different features make this freezer a great asset to our home. First, it holds a lot of food, from grocery products to leftovers. There are two storage baskets that came with our purchase, that hold smaller items, such as little boxes of vegetables, pint sized ice creams and frozen baggies of leftovers. This newer model of our freezer comes with 5 baskets, which would be so helpful.
The freezer also has a lock on the outside; however, we have long ago lost our key to the lock. This is a good feature to prevent young children from getting into the freezer and accidentally shutting themselves in. The freezer also came with two lights, one on the inside that will illuminate the interior making it easier to find what you are looking for and an indicator light on the outside indicating that the freezer is plugged into the wall. One problem with the inside light we have found is that the cold seems to really drain the light bulb even though we purchased the correct kind of bulb. My husband removed the bulb and we do not have a light inside.
The freezer is a white model with a matching white handle and it is textured outside which helps to keep off the marks and scuffs from everyday living. And today's models are geared toward more energy efficiency, and even though ours is an older model it doesn't use a great deal of electricity. There are of course, smaller models of freezers, but we purchased this one because of its large capacity and we still had three of our four children living at home.
Having a freezer, separate and apart from the one in your refrigerator is a bonus. A larger separate freezer will allow you to purchase items that are on sale at your local stores and to save leftovers without running out of freezer room.
There are some things I would consider when purchasing a new freezer in the future. I want to purchase one that is energy star efficient and that is an automatic defrost to save the time it takes to defrost this unit.
