This classic food processor is standard operating equipment for the modern kitchen. It assists with a multitude of tasks, from blending to chopping to kneading bread dough. There are four basic attachments. The simple stainless chopping blade is probably the most useful, as it not only chops perfectly, but also blends and purees, as well. For cooks who bake a lot of home-made bread, the plastic kneading blade makes quick work of a time consuming task. There is an attachment for creating julienne slices and one for larger slices, replacing the need for a mandoline. In fact, this appliance will eliminate the need for a number of kitchen implements and knives.
The work bowl holds seven cups, though liquids are tricky to deal with. If the liquid comes up over the level of the blade attachment, it will seep out. Presumably, food processors are not really supposed to be used as blenders, and that's why there are separate appliances for processing liquids. For cooks making food in larger quantity, there is a model available with a work bowl that holds 20 cups, but the price is considerably higher.
The blade sits close to the bottom of the work bowl, so it is able to process relatively small quantities. However, for really small projects, an even smaller unit and work bowl will be required.
The current model comes with a multi-sized feed tube that will process a whole potato. A pusher allows an extra shove without risking injury.
The parts are a snap to clean. However, when washing the plastic parts, be sure to put them on the top level of the dishwasher. Even though they can withstand the high heat of the lower level, it's quite possible that they will no longer fit just right when you put them back on the machine. The white base is easily wiped clean as well, and the cord rolls up underneath, for ease of storage.
This appliance will be put to nearly daily use in the majority of kitchens, so it's good to know that the motor comes with a 5-year manufacturer's warranty. The motor is powerful, so it very rarely strains. The appliance can be operated at dual speeds - one is for continuous mixing and one is pulse, for mixing in short bursts. The pulse feature is important when making pastry dough that becomes tough if churned too long.
Although the official price is $180, this model is usually available online or on sale at stores for $100. The low price makes it the perfectly affordable housewarming gift for new homeowners. Their kitchen will not be complete without it.
