The Bosch 1276D is a hefty sander that is powerful and good enough for professional jobs as well as DIY projects and general maintenance in and around the home.
It is a low 10.5 amp machine and is rated at 120 volts AC. The belt size is generous - 4 " x 24 " - and it has a cloth dust bag, which I consider essential. Its machining speed potential is 1,550 feet per minute, which means you can get the job done really quickly.
In addition to the standard D-handle at the back of the sander, this sturdy design features a nice, fat D-grip in front which is adjustable. The entire handle can be folded away when you need to get in close. This makes it perfect for getting into awkward places, for instance sanding the tops of doors that have become swollen because of damp weather.
It can also be used with a sanding frame, a stand or a fence, although I've never taken advantage of these features.
We've owned this model Bosch belt sander for several years and find that it is great for maintenance jobs and furniture makeovers. One of the most successful jobs was restoring an old Oregon pine table to its former glory. I didn't have a workshop at the time, but was still able to do all the sanding indoors without making undue mess. This is because the dust bag works so efficiently, getting rid of all the dust residue. I did, however, need to finish the surface with my smaller orbital sander.
We've also used the Bosch 1276D to prepare surfaces for repainting and even to get rid of surface rust on our garden gate.
One of the great things about this machine is that because it is so sturdy, you don't have to exert a lot of downward force to get it to do the job. Its own weight takes a lot of the stress and strain that another lighter weight sander inevitably puts on your arm muscles. But you do have to use both arms, which is, in any case safer.
The size of the belt is a boon when working on wide surfaces, like a table top or solid wooden door. It is also really quick and easy to change the belts either when one wears out, or when you need to change the grit size.
