The ProHeat Upright Deep Carpet Cleaner uses hot water to dislodge years of dirt and debris and gives new life to your old carpet. At 39 pounds, it's a bit heavy to carry up stairs, but there is a hose and nozzle attachment that makes it possible to clean the stairs themselves. The hose (with the crevice attachment) can also be used to clean upholstery and even your car's interior.

The built-in heating device raises the temperature of the water by 25 degrees. So if you start with hot water, it will be even hotter by the time it reaches your carpet. However, the device will not exceed 190 degrees. The heater draws power from the 12 amp motor, so when making a final pass, turn the heater off for increased vacuuming power.

The cleaning formula is stored in a separate container on this model. The water tank is all-in-one, what Bissell calls the 'tank-in-tank.' As the plastic bladder containing the clean water is used up, it shrinks in size, allowing the tank to fill with dirty water - so there's just one tank to rinse out and refill.

The cleaning path is 12 inches wide on this machine, and the cord is 30 feet long. There are 12 rows of brushes that rotate for deep cleaning and carpet grooming. There are three settings, so you can choose a light, normal or heavy traffic cleanse, and a rinse only cycle to remove extra soap. For delicate rugs, turn the hot water off and use the 'light' setting. The brushes can clean right up to the walls without scratching the baseboard due to the edge-sweep design.

It's important to vacuum thoroughly beforehand. Even so, the waste water will soon be black from all the debris embedded in the carpet. After cleaning, the carpet will appear several shades lighter. Passing slowly at all stages of cleaning will allow the machine to suck up more dirt, and more water on the final stage so that the carpet dries more quickly.

To clean carpet on the stairs, position the machine on the top landing and use the hose and nozzle attachment to work down halfway. Then carry the machine to the bottom of the stairs, start at the halfway mark and work your way down to the bottom.

The retail price of this machine is $299.99 and it is well worth the money. Not only will it save you the cost of having your carpets professionally cleaned, it is so easy to use that it's no big deal to deep clean your rugs more often.
