From Section 5 of RFC 2821.Currently, If an MX query fails then an A record is queried to find a mail server.  In my opinion, this will only lead to trouble.  In most cases, this will lead to email being sent to a webserver since it has that address.  If the webserver also happens to be running an SMTP server on the same IP, a misleading message will be generated, most likely along the lines of unable to relay.  This situation has happened to me a few times and the other mail server admin tells me that my server is generating that message which I confirmed was incorrect after reviewing SMTP logs.
