i don't think such a thing is possible. probably u might have gone wrong. As the video adapter has a certain amount of RAM or so called the memory, which makes it function better. in current market it varies from 16MB-128MB. well there is nothing like sharing it with the primary memory(RAM). The video card it's own memory and no memory can be shared.

i think anoop dont understand what hes saying, maybe hes just an average computer user pretending to be an advance user.

of course you can increase the allocation of your shared video memory(on board video). enter the BIOS setup and go to integrated peripherals, then to video option, and then finally go to agp aperture size. there you can set your shared video memory to 8mb, 16mn,32, and 64mb. right at this time 64mb is the maximum allocation of video memory in an onboard video adapter. i wish motherboard manufacturers could give an option to share an onboard video ram upto 128 mb  <b_boink>

Yes, definitely a big problem. I use a 2.4 ghz laptop with 64 mb onboard shared vram which is simply insufficient for my animation requirements which are graphics intensive. So far, I have not received any feedback from manufacturers such as ati, on the possible solution through a usb device that could somehow connect with the mother board and allow vram upgrades upto 256/512 mb.

I'd like to be able to take credit for this, but to be real, b_boink's answer is the real deal. One addendum; BIOS alteration doesn't always use the same terminology, so read though your board's info before the deadly "Save Settings And Exit" line.
But the factual stuff about onboard video memory reallocation is right on the money (I do this for clients all the time); add a DIMM and allocate half of it (up to the current 64Mb onboard limit) and it's a cheap, fast upgrade.  -Go for it! -MJ

This topic has gotten alot of wierd feedback, I'll help set everything straight. Some bios have options to increase onboard video memory but every motherboard has a different bios. some boads may only let you use 1mb and some up to 128 or possibly more. this also depends on the ammount of ram you have also, if you only have 128mbs of ram its not going to allow you to set aside all of it for memory. if you dont have option in your bios to change memory values then it simply goes by how much ram you have, the more ram the more it will set aside for video untill it reaches the boards maximum.

onboard memory isnt very good anyway, you can run games better with a 64mb gforce card than you can on a onboard 128. alot of people think memory is everything but when it comes to gaming it doesnt mean much at all. just get a video card, it has its own GPU so it doesnt strain your CPU as much. also make sure you get a good quality one like name brand nvidia because if you skimp out you will realize that all cards arent created equal and alot of games wont even open due to lack of rendering capabilities of your card, like for instance most games now require shaders and alot of cards dont have that so you wont even see the main title of your game.

you can minimize amount of shared memory by going to motherboard setup(you enter setup by preesing DEL key in most computers at start up). I did so.
