Officially there is no such thing as a miniature, that I'm aware of.  Someone must have bred a small female to a small male and ended up with small puppies.  Jacks come in all shapes and sizes.  Some people believe that the true Jack is the short-legged, stocky dog.  Others have the longer legs and smaller bones.  Sometimes a dog will come out with the small bones and the short legs, therefore looking miniature.

there are dogs that are considered to be 'miniature JRTs'...usually parented by a male teacup chihuahua and a small JRT.  Not an official breed, and cant be shown...but I have one, and they are the cutest things ever!

I also have a miniature or "toy" JRT.  I emailed a jrt breeder asking if they knew of anyone who bred miniatures (I too am looking for info on miniatures jrt's and am also trying to track down our dog's breeder-long story...).  The breeder emailed me back and arrogantly proclaimed there is no such breed.  Well There is!  and she is not just a short legged jrt, and I do not believe she has been bred with a chihuahua.  Our little girl is about the size of one of our female cats. She is very nicely proportioned too. I found a website for a breeder who does cross her jrt's with a chihuahua.  The website is: www.teacupandtoypet.com  What sort of information are you looking for?

I have been breeding short leg Jack Russell for 14 years. There is no such breed as a mini jack or toy jack. This is just a name that someone gave to their pups because it sounds a little more impressive than short legged. All a breeder has to do to produce small pups, it to keep the shortest females to breed back to a small male. Soon you are breeding so called " toy of mini " or any other name they might put on their pups.

Donna:

We have a toy jack russel terrier.  We do not have a short legged jrt.  She is beautifully proportioned.  Because a breed is not yet recognized by akc, or nkc or jrtca does not mean they do not exist.  They do and we own one.

You can find information on short legged JRTs through two clubs. The Short Legged Jack Russell Terrier Club www.shortjrt.homestead.com or the English Jack Russell Terrier Club Alliance www.ejrtca.com. The United Kennel Club has recognized the shorter JRT as a separate breed from the Parson's JRT. They call it a Russell Terrier.

I don't think there's any toy or mini JRT. My JR is super small but it's because both her parents are small. She probably will only be the size of a yorkie (not the tea cup one) or even smaller.

I am a breeder and shower of Jack Russells, true jacks by the au standard can range in height from 10 to 12 inches and generally a jack will be between these'sheights, however at times you will end up with a smaller jack I presently have one here who is only 8inches, I certainly am not under the impression that she is a mini of the breed, she is simply smaller then others, just like people you don't consider anyone who is a couple of inches shorter then another a miniature human!  At the same time you can also get taller jacks and they are not consider giants of the breed.  It is generally irresponsible breeders who continue with with small strain usually with no consideration for the dogs or the breed.

Joanne,  Since you are sure that you have a mini jack russell, please tell every one about how big they are and about how much they weigh.  It might shed some light on what every one is talking about.  I think every one has a different idea of what a mini  or toy jack russell looks like.

Donna is correct in her original statement about Short-Legged JRTs.  If you want to be technical about it they are NOT miniatures, they're short legged. A standard JRT weights 9-15lbs and stands at 12-15in. Where as a Short-Legged JRT typically weights 8-12lbs and stand at 10-13in. I'm a Certified Veterinary Technician and have a Short-Legged JRT of my own whom I obtained from a breeder who only does Standard JRTs and Short-Legged JRTs. Any purebred JRT that is smaller than specified is considered to have a genetic defect.

I am wanting to know if his size is considered a mini jack russell. I have been calling him just short legged, but maybe I have something special. Please let me know.

Mini, toy, and pocket are just descriptive words used in a sales pitch. A Jack Russell is a Jack Russell regardless of size. With the shorter legged JRTs, call them what you want but that doesn't make them a separate breed. Short legged or shortie can be used to describe any JRT that is 12 inches and under and longer than tall...using the descriptive term "shortie" does not include the square built dogs regardless of their height. The EJRTCA recognizes the 8-12 inch longer than tall JRT. The UKC has broken the JRT into two breed though. They call the 12-15 inch square Parson's type JRT a Jack Russell and the 10-12 inch longer than tall JRT a Russell Terrier. The AKC only recognizes the taller dog and calls it a Parson's Russell Terrier. The JRTCA recongizes the 10-15 inch JRT. The smaller less reputable registries (NKC, CKC, DRA, etc) don't care as long as you are willing to give them money to register your dog. There are plenty of under 10 inch JRTs out there that are not genetic defects (dwarfism) and they are not rare either. If you are looking for a shortie JRT, they are easy enough to find if you do a little homework.

To Melissa,  Thank you for your info. I agree with you 100 per cent.  There are no mini or toy's just a good salesman selling his/her dogs! The people buying those pups do not have knowledge about the breed, but only know what they have been told by the person misrepresenting them.  It is nice to have someone with your knowledge writing on this web page. Thanks again

People want to give their dogs a title to prove they are special and unique.  The fact is every dog, no matter what breed or mix, weight or height, is special and unique in its own right.  These little creatures that we share our homes with work their way into our hearts with affection, loyalty and humor not by the name of its breed.

A JRT is JRT. Yes there is a short legged type, but that is it. Yes there is ones that are smaller than others, but that is all they are. They are not miniatures they are just a small JRT.

We have had a miniature Jack Russell and unfortunetly got him nutered when he was young.  I would have loved to have bred him but obviously can't now.  He is about 6 inches tall and 10 pounds.  He is the best dog we have every had he has a great personality and is just like any dog just in a small package. I wouldn't get any other kind of dog.  I would recomend a min jack to anyone. Since we like to travel we take him everywhere and everyone loves him!! He is not as delicate as a small dog and is just perfect. I hope to get another one just like him!!

Miniature JRT's? Well here in the North of England the smaller 10-12" JRT has always been referred to as a miniature rather than shortie or puddin which is the term the irish tend to use.
If someone was to come on the phone & ask me where to find a miniature JRT i'd know what they were talking about. Even some of the Parson breeders here in England call the small ones miniatures. Its certainly not a sales gimmick its just easier to be able to differentiate the parson & smaller JRT, as in many countries the JRT & PRT were thought of as the same breed until KC recognition.
I breed the small ones & mine are not heavy, queen anne legged or crossed with another breed to make them small neither are they bred from runt to runt they are genetically bred to be small agile working dogs www.jackrussellsofcumbria.cjb.net & very soon will be KC/FCI registered as JRT!
On my website i do state that some people know these small dogs by either miniature of short legged JRT & i for one am not here to argue with the rest of the world as to what is a JRT. As long as you love the dog you have no matter what term is used miniature, puddin, shortie, parson, long legged etc.........thats all that matters.

I just bought two NKC registered JRTs from a great breeder in North Carolina.  They are within the normal size range for JRTs.  However, just after I bought my puppies the breeder had a new litter.  This was two months ago and the smallest of the litter is what I would call a "mini", weighing in at 14 ounces at 2 months old.  Both sire and dam and all other puppies are normal.  This puppy is totally normal and health, also, except for his size.

The term "toy or mini" is simply a descriptive word used to differentiate a smaller version from the standard. I don't think it is intended to rip people off, but you have to be careful.  There are reputable breeders out there that have worked for years on producing smaller versions of the JRT breed (not cross-bred), and you will usually pay more for these.  Just keep in mind that it is all genetics, and even small parents can produce larger pups. However, there is a good chance they will stay small if both parents are small, and a good breeder will give you an estimated size, not a guarantee. If you want to take the gamble, do some research for a reputable breeder so the odds will be in your favor, and you can call it "toy, mini" or whatever you like.

I, too, have a Jack Russell Terrier, who is smaller than most other JRT's that I have viewed. Although there is some dispute as to whether a "Jack Russell Terrier" is different than a "Russell Terrier," I consider "Milo" to be a JRT. He does have short legs with a longer body shape and solid white, wire coat. Some consider him to be a "shorty" or "puddin" JRT. He is 12 pounds, fully grown, and nicely proportioned. Frankly, I don't care what he is, in terms of breed name and description, I simply know that he is smart, cute and one of the best dogs with which I have shared my life.

I  recently adopted a short legged JR that weighs 9lbs.  She was kept outside in brutally cold weather and was unwanted.  I had never had a JR before, but had missed my little dog who recently died.  He was a little dog who was energetic but loving.  This new JR had a name of DaisyMae, and although I am no LIL ABNER, she is my sweetheart! She minds well and is very smart.  I am thankful I found her and I think she is thanful she found me!

Just a question especially for Melissa from 6/26/2004 - but anyone can answer: I have a registered JRT that is (I think) 10 3/4" could be 11". He is not short-legged,  meaning not shorter than long. He is perfectly proportioned according to breeding standards, and does not have a longer nose or slightly larger head like the short-legged ones do.  I was reading what the requirements are for Parsons etc. and he looks exactly like a Parson's (no short legs), but is not 12-15".  I was told long or short-legged the requirement was 10-15".  What category does he fall into?  Build like a parson, but has the height of short-legged.  He is NOT what all of these people are convinced is "Miniature" JRT.

I own a female JRT who is 8 months old and stands at 10.5 inches at her withers. She is broken haired and has all the descriptive personality traits and temperment as any "standard" JRT, based on my own "amatuer" research. I'm just slightly stumped on how tiny and light in weight she appears to be. I thought for a minute I owned a mini; however, it appears there is no such existence. Her height is average but she appears so much smaller than others I've seen. Is this normal for her age of 8 months? If this is of any help, her mother and father were both short legged. I'm curious on when a JRT meets his or her full growth into adult-hood.

Bottom line, there are jack russell terriers that are significantly smaller in height and weight than the average, so it's easier to distinguish the difference by giving them a pre-fix to their specific bread.. (miniature, toy, whatever) It's an easier way to differentiate between the standard sized, and those who have been bread to a smaller size.

What is considered as the Mini JRT is actually a cross between a chihuahua and a Jack Russel. I met one for the first time today, and I was not aware of their existence beforehand. And the name suits them, ans they are incredibly shrunken versions of JRTs. There are very few in the country, and not many people know of their existence. I might be getting one at the end of next year, as the person I met today will be breeding his dogs next year and, if I am in the position to do so, I will be purchasing one of the puppies. They are the cutest and tiniest dogs I've ever seen! They beat any chihuahua's charms by far.

Skip is a short-legged stubby little fellow and about giving them a name and saying it's cruel to call them a different breed I think that's ridiculous how do they know what the dogs like to be called but all the same I love my dog soooooooooo much and mini or normal he will always be my baby.

I have a short-legged JRT.  She's approx. 8 inches at the withers and she is just over 7 months old.  She hasn't reached her full growth yet, but I don't expect her to get much bigger than around 10 inches.  Maybe up to 12, but I doubt it.  She was the "runt" of the litter and the other pups were taller and heavier than she was.  She is very sturdy and muscular and I have never had a dog as smart, tenacious, active, inquisitive and funny as she is.  The JRT is not a breed for the faint hearted.  It takes my two teens, my husband and myself to keep her happy, busy and out of mischief!  I've taught her many tricks already and she is always keen to learn a new one or play a new game with us.  Her cutest trick is to jump onto the piano stool and "play" the piano on command.  Anyway, she may be smaller than some, but that just means we can concentrate our affection over a smaller area.  More love per square inch!

Well since all of you believe that you indeed have a MINI JRT the we can add yet another breed to the list, I breed JRT'sand personally own two"pets" that are 17" tall and weight approx. 28 lbs. So I guess that I have "GIANT" JRT's

OK, to all you people I read above,  a few words come to mind!   1st. Can you Say Runt of litter (that happens in all Breeds!), 2nd Yes Russell Terrier comes from England and Ireland, they are NOT the same as JRT. 3rd. Have u seen the Russell aka Short legged JRT on most all the commercials and ads now (photographers and trainers etc.. like them as they are more calm then most of the talls..

So to say Toy is so incorrect, yes smaller than a norm Russell is possible Kia is 8.5" and 9-10lbs depending on the time of year!  Check her site at kiapet.com

Enjoy your Dog, Kia was the runt and no one wanted her since she has small overbite, etc. but she is the most famous from her breeder, but most importantly my lil bud that I take Everywhere!

Take care All!

My family and I were about to by a mini-jack Russell, but the breeder knew nothing about the bread or what most of you say "just short legged". I too am also wondering about them:there size, weight, personality, and what they are like compared to a normal sized jack Russell terrier.     Please if anyone has any info on this animal please email me at Taycon145@yahoo.com    Thank you!

Hey I have a miniature jack russel... I bought him from a girl that my husband works with... She does register them at an extra cost... and She breeds and sells them all the time... My dog is a year old and he is not as long as my laptop screen and his belly is about a fist from the ground... he is very muscled... I chose the smallest of the puppies... i have many pictures of him... he is full blooded jrt... I have always been a big fan of really small dogs... please note that is you are looking for a jack russell and have never had one -- jack russells are very excited and playful and active and like to tear things up ... like pillows .. haha

I have a short JRT. She is 7-1/2 months old and only weighs 8 lbs and is about 8 inches high at the withers. Unfortunately, her front feet turn outward and her front knees are knobby.  Her body is longer than she is high, and people say she has a big head compared to her body.  Would she be considered a dwarf? We are having blood tests run for hypothyroidism and pituitary problem.  The vet says she may also need x-rays to determine the cause of her outward turned feet.  Has anyone experienced this problem also?

Ive never heard such bickering about minature jr's in all my life-get a life people.
I have a 8week old pup which I obtained from neighbours whom have both mummy and daddy and they really are lovely to look at beautiful colours and amazing temperments
How can anyone speak for all pups and breeders by saying breeding these animals is irresponsible.
My neighbours home is like a dooggie verison of the Waltons.
My view is if you have a pet spend your time loveing it rather than fighting its so...'PETTY'

I have what is known as a mini jrt... only because he is part chihuahua. HIs mother was a 6 lb chi... and he is only 8.5 lbs... he stands about 9.5 inches tall and is 12 inches long. He has distinct jrt markings, from the floppy ears to the spot on his back.. although his ears aren't drop v's... id say mor of a "u" shape... he is one of the best dogs i have ever owned and truly a sweet heart.. he has a true jrt spirit and heart to go with. he's bold, energetic and even though he is a woppiong 8.5 lbs... he a tough thing to keep up with... so what ever he is called or known as... it doesnt matter! since when has a dog had to have certain guideliness to be what it really is... a dog!!!  best of luck to all of you with your little furry friends!

jacks are very demanding and need loads of exercise....not good with small children and best taken to puppy classes at 4 months of age !!! jack.clinton@ntlworld.com

Different fanciers breed different sized JRT's. There is a well recorded strain of 'Pocket Jack Russells' and they are bred by Britannia Kennels in the UK. This kennel has been breeding and recording the pedigrees of their animals since 1910. Their strain goes back to the original Old English White Terrier (now extinct). They have actually trademarked the name 'Pocket JRT'.

There is a difference between a JRT that is 2" smaller than the norm and a genuine pocket JRT. I don't agree with the argument that you wouldn't call an 8" JRT miniature, however, of course you would! That represents at least a 20% reduction in the standard height.

In answer to MinduraJacks If a human was 4ft tall as opposed to 5ft, which is already small like all JRT's, then i would certainly refer to them as a miniature person (not in practise as that would be politically incorrect!)A 2" reduction in the height of a JRT is relativelu substantial.

A miniature jrt that is not a russell terrier is either a bastard or a genetic screwup with recessive genes.  Dogs need to be bred with an intended job in mind.  Not to fulfill a passing fad.  Does anyone breeding these bastard dogs realize how much pain they will unintentionally create?  I work at a humane society and a vet clinic.  Every, every day at both places, animals suffering due to irresponsible breeders.

i think there should be a mini JRT class. i say this as i have seen and read of so many small/mini JRT why should they be thought of as a defect dog. i have a very small JRT girl called bubbles and i cannot see anything wrong with her conformation so why would it be a defect being smaller.

The standard JRT recognized by the AKC is usually around 10-15 lbs. Miniature JRTs are simply small bred dogs, not crosses, and they are not registered under AKC, but do have a registry and do have shows under that registry. Tanglewood Miniature Farms is one of the few that breeds them. They are registered under the miniature jack registry and are typically under 10. TMF has been breeding them for years. They are not as hyperactive as standard JRTs and can be real couch potatoes. Like i said, they aren't recognized by the AKC, but the standard JRT wasn't recognized until a few years ago, and neither are many other breeds, such as the white german shepherd, not that they are any less of a breed than those recognized by AKC. But there is a mini JRT registry with standards and a registration and showing process.

I THINK THIS IS ALL A BIT SILLY!THERE IS NO 'PURE BREED' JACK RUSSELLS,IF THERE WAS,THEY WOULD BE KC REGISTERED!! I HAVE A JACK RUSSELL MINIATURE, WHO IS 8IN HEIGHT, AND 12IN ACROSS, FEMALE 1 1/2 YRS OLD, AND A STANDARD, GOOD OL HARD WORKING JACK RUSSELL TERRIER WHO IS 14IN HEIGHT, AND 23IN ACROSS, AND SHE IS 3YRS OLD. MY MINI JRT IS PREGNANT, AND IF I HAD BRED HER WITH A STANDARD JRT,SHE WOULD MOST DEFINITELY HAVE DIED DURING LABOUR!!MINI/STANDARD/SHORT-LEGGED, THEY ARE ALL SPECIAL,SO STOP GOING ON ABOUT WHAT YOU ALL KNOW BEST,GET OVER IT, AND PUT THAT SAME DETERMINATION INTO LOVING YOUR RUSSELL!!

I purchased a “Miniature” Jack Russell (Bailey) on Sunday, April 22, 2007 and I just love him to death.  He is twelve weeks old and weighs two pounds three ounces and is a little over five inches tall.  I was led to believe by the breeder that there is such a thing as a “miniature” Jack Russell.  However, after talking with my veterinarian, I do not believe this is the case.  I think my breeder has just kept breeding small Jack Russell’s with other small Jack Russell’s to produce a “miniature” Jack Russell.  In the end it does not really matter to me because he is such a great dog.

This is a breeders site which breeds pocket JRT's. They have their own breed standard; these pocket JRTs are nothing like ''standard'' JRT's and differ in temperament, colouring & size.

I have a 10 1/2" tall small-boned full blooded male Jack Russel Terrier about 12 lbs.  He is not stocky at all and is well-proportioned.  I have always considered him a runt-Jack.  He is jump-challenged and not as energetic as our older mutt-Jack (JRT & American Eskimo mix who doesn't realize he's 7 years old yet and jumps straight up 5 feet from his back legs).  We called him Radar, because his ears stand straight up which is also a no-go with the AKC.  But as I don't have any interest in having a show dog, he suits me just fine.  I guess it would be nicer to call him a Mini-Jack.
NOTE:  I've had both our adorable Jacks fixed.
