I have a Bumper Pool table with three holes.  The third hole is located in the center of the Bumper grid.  What is it's purpose and what rules apply?

the center hole is for the players last ball, if a player pots a ball in the center hole, before the last ball, they either lose their turn or lose the game.

According to the rules I was taught to play by, the last ball must be banked into the center hole.  Putting a ball in the center hole earlier in the game is the same as sinking the 8 ball in regulation pool. You lose.

How common is it to have a third hole in the center? I seem to recall this from a YMCA table in the early 60s, that was probably manufactured in the 1950s... but I've not seen a bumper pool table since then.
