WHAT YEAR DID THE CIVIL WAR START? AND WHO WAS INVOLVED?

The Confederate States of America and the United States of America were the two opposing parties.  The USofA in the North and the CSofA in the South.  The Confederate States of America formed in February of 1861 so my best guess would place the start of the war shortly afterwords.  Of course I found this page in a search for the answer to the question so it follows that I haven't actually found the answer yet.

I think the Civil war started in the piriod between 1861 and 1862.Because in 1861 the Confederat states where formed. In 1862 the Battle of Shilo and Antietom took place.Antietom was one of the bloodiest battles in the civil war. That is why I think the Civil war took place between 1861 and 1862.

Its funny how we just go for the date. What was the reason for the civil war? That is when it started.Correct me if Im wrong.Didnt the south get rid of free entreprise and make it imposible or hard to get control of anything.Wasnt the whole south under the control of only the wealthy few.And the only way they could keep control of there vast holdings was with slavery.

The American Civil war started on April 12, 1861, at Fort Sumter, the war was finally over on 1865 at Appomattox because General Robert E Lee, surrendered, a few days later Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, who was later found and shot to death. The period after the civil war is called the reconstruction period or the antebellum. Enjoy!

On April 10, 1861, Brig. Gen. Beauregard, in command of the provisional Confederate forces at Charleston, South Carolina, demanded the surrender of the Union garrison of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Garrison commander Anderson refused. On April 12, Confederate batteries opened fire on the fort, which was unable to reply effectively. At 2:30 p.m., April 13, Major Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter, evacuating the garrison on the following day. The bombardment of Fort Sumter was the opening engagement of the American Civil War. Although there were no casualties during the bombardment, one Union artillerist was killed and three wounded (one mortally) when a cannon exploded prematurely when firing a salute during the evacuation.

The war was Cival War began April 1962 and ended April 1965 killing hundreds of thousands of American men.  However, it is false that this war was based on "slavery" issues.  Southern states began succeeding due to unusually high taxation from the North, supporting their most wealthy.  They also believed that each state had it's own "right to chose" regarding slavery.  But, please remember the blacks fought on behalf of the Confederacy (the South).  Don't be fooled, the war was not about slavery at all.  It was a blood bath that Lincoln had forcasted even before becoming elected.

The civil war started between April 10-12, 1861.  It was started when General Beauregard of the Confederate States of American fired upon Fort Sumter from Charleston, SC.  This began one of the most blood fought wars of all times.  The slavery issue was only part of the reason for the war.  The Southern States wished to keep each state as its own governing body.  If any wrongs were done by slavery, the price has been paid by the many that died in the war.  I do not believe the war ended appox. when Lee surrendered to Grant.  The Tenn. Amy under the leadership of General Johnston surrendered his army in Greensboro, NC on April 26, 1865.  Other generals may have surrendered after this date.  But I would suppose it to be best to just say the war ended the last week of April 1865.

Time Line of The Civil War, 1861
1861 | 1862 | 1863 | 1864 | 1865 | Other Photographs

This time line was compiled by Joanne Freeman and owes a special debt to the Encyclopedia of American History by Richard B. Morris.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

January 1861 -- The South Secedes.
When Abraham Lincoln, a known opponent of slavery, was elected president, the South Carolina legislature perceived a threat. Calling a state convention, the delegates voted to remove the state of South Carolina from the union known as the United States of America. The secession of South Carolina was followed by the secession of six more states -- Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas -- and the threat of secession by four more -- Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These eleven states eventually formed the Confederate States of America.

February 1861 -- The South Creates a Government.
At a convention in Montgomery, Alabama, the seven seceding states created the Confederate Constitution, a document similar to the United States Constitution, but with greater stress on the autonomy of each state. Jefferson Davis was named provisional president of the Confederacy until elections could be held.

February 1861 -- The South Seizes Federal Forts.
When President Buchanan -- Lincoln's predecessor -- refused to surrender southern federal forts to the seceding states, southern state troops seized them. At Fort Sumter, South Carolina troops repulsed a supply ship trying to reach federal forces based in the fort. The ship was forced to return to New York, its supplies undelivered.

March 1861 -- Lincoln's Inauguration.
At Lincoln's inauguration on March 4, the new president said he had no plans to end slavery in those states where it already existed, but he also said he would not accept secession. He hoped to resolve the national crisis without warfare.

April 1861 -- Attack on Fort Sumter.
When President Lincoln planned to send supplies to Fort Sumter, he alerted the state in advance, in an attempt to avoid hostilities. South Carolina, however, feared a trick; the commander of the fort, Robert Anderson, was asked to surrender immediately. Anderson offered to surrender, but only after he had exhausted his supplies. His offer was rejected, and on April 12, the Civil War began with shots fired on the fort. Fort Sumter eventually was surrendered to South Carolina.

April 1861 -- Four More States Join the Confederacy.
The attack on Fort Sumter prompted four more states to join the Confederacy. With Virginia's secession, Richmond was named the Confederate capitol.

June 1861 -- West Virginia Is Born.
Residents of the western counties of Virginia did not wish to secede along with the rest of the state. This section of Virginia was admitted into the Union as the state of West Virginia on June 20, 1863.

June 1861 -- Four Slave States Stay in the Union.
Despite their acceptance of slavery, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri did not join the Confederacy. Although divided in their loyalties, a combination of political maneuvering and Union military pressure kept these states from seceding.

View of the battlefield,
First Bull Run,
Virginia, July 1861

July 1861 -- First Battle of Bull Run.
Public demand pushed General-in-Chief Winfield Scott to advance on the South before adequately training his untried troops. Scott ordered General Irvin McDowell to advance on Confederate troops stationed at Manassas Junction, Virginia. McDowell attacked on July 21, and was initially successful, but the introduction of Confederate reinforcements resulted in a Southern victory and a chaotic retreat toward Washington by federal troops.

None of the included photographs of First Bull Run were made at the time of battle (July 21); the photographers had to wait until the Confederate Army evacuated Centreville and Manassas in March 1862. Their views of various landmarks of the previous summer are arranged according to the direction of the federal advance, a long flanking movement by Sudley's Ford.

July 1861 -- General McDowell Is Replaced.
Suddenly aware of the threat of a protracted war and the army's need for organization and training, Lincoln replaced McDowell with General George B. McClellan.

July 1861 -- A Blockade of the South.
To blockade the coast of the Confederacy effectively, the federal navy had to be improved. By July, the effort at improvement had made a difference and an effective blockade had begun. The South responded by building small, fast ships that could outmaneuver Union vessels.

Port Royal, South Carolina -- 1861-1862
On November 7, 1861, Captain Samuel F. Dupont's warships silenced Confederate guns in Fort Walker and Fort Beauregard. This victory enabled General Thomas W. Sherman's troops to occupy first Port Royal and then all the famous Sea Islands of South Carolina, where Timothy H. O'Sullivan recorded them making themselves at home.

Confederate Winter Quarters -- 1861-1862
These photographs show Confederate winter quarters at Manassas, Centreville, Fairfax Court House, and Falls Church, Virginia.

The Civil War started on April 12,1869 and ended on April 9th,1865.It was caused for several reasons. Some were slavery, states not getting along because slave states and free states were fighting for states, and slave states thinking Abraham Lincolin was a threat to slavery. But slavery wasn't the only cause for the war.It was either the South or the Northerners that would have picnics by battles and watch the battles  happen.

the Civil war began April 12, 1861 in the name of moral values; North stood for change and the South stood for retaining their old ways. It is unfair to say the war was in the name of slavery, though it was an issue, because only 5% of the Southern population held slaves, and it is unfair to say that the war was held in the name of states rights, though that too was an issue, because you can't unite the confederacy on individuality and separation; that is just contradictory to itself. The way the South rallied support and united, is through the evangelical churches, strong political leaders (usually plantation owners) began asking for everyone (mostly Yeomen farmers who didn't own slaves but dreamed of becoming plantation owners one day) to stand and fight for their brothers and the morality that was (supposedly) being challenged by the North.
-Jay

P.S: BTW most of the answers on here are a waste of time and should be deleted. Lots of you need spell check. And you should care about the Civil War Bob and Ree, it is important to understand how and why things occurred so that we as a whole can progress. And Ree, I wouldn't say that the Civil war or History in general is dumb, when you can't even spell "knowing" correctly.
