I have my nipples, clit and belly button pierced and I have to have surgery, is there plastic jewelry you can put in for the surgery?  If not what else can I do to guarantee that the newer piercings will stay open?

I don't know what kind of surgery you're having, but I'd be surprised if you need to remove anything at all. Medically there's no good reason.

You can use Nylon filament ( like fishing line ) to keep your piercings open, but it will still be obvious that you are pierced, even if you remove the jewelry completely.

The best plan is to tell the surgeon and leave the decision to him/her.

I know of people who have had extra piercings done while under the anaesthetic.

Try to remember that the medical profession have 'seen it all before', and won't be shocked.

Luve Bunny, you will need to consult your GP as soon as possible.  The likely recommendation will be to have the area cleaned with an antiseptic wash.

You must be sure to keep a close eye on your jewelry and given the nature of your clitoral area, it is going to become damp and humid during the day and night, and so ideally you should remove future bars regularly to clean them thoroughly and dry.  Also whilst cleaning the bar, carefully clean the piercing as dead skin and other bacteria will build up in the piercing.

Try to invest in a bar which will not rust, such as silver or gold.

I'd start by shooting the piercer - unless you've changed the jewelry yourself since it was done...

The following comments apply equally to ALL piercings, not just the one you have.

It's vital you use only the right type of non-allergenic material for the part which goes through your flesh - and it makes sense that the complete item should probably be made of the same stuff.

316L Stainless, solid Gold, Niobium, Titanium and most plastics are OK, so there's plenty of choice.

Don't use 'gold plated', as it's normally done over a layer of Nickel, which is extremely irritating, and the metal underneath could be absolutely anything...

The 'L' in 316L Stainless means LOW NICKEL.

Some people will advise you to remove the jewelry while the wound heals - take advice from your doctor, it probably isn't necessary, so you won't have to be re-pierced.

All piercings will shrink if you remove the jewelry, but they won't actually heal over unless the scar tissue inside has been destroyed by the infection, or you leave it out for a year or more.

Patience and a stretching taper may still be sufficient to get things working again if you do remove the jewelry - just watch out for sharp edges which can damage the newly healed flesh.

If your jewelry has gone rusty, it wasn't made of the right stuff in the first place - get it changed urgently.

The advice to change it to Silver or Gold isn't totally correct, as Silver tarnishes in the damp, and shouldn't be used for the part of the jewelry which goes through the piercing ( better still not at all ) and a lot of the 'Gold' jewelry that's around at the moment is actually just plated over something cheaper - which eventually corrodes when the plating wears off.

Gold is also too soft for items like BCR's as it stretches easily and the ball drops out, which is no fun when the open end of the ring gets snagged on something..

If your problem was just a crusty deposit building up on the surface of the jewelry, you're not cleaning it properly - I'd have expected you to take good care of it, as any sort of contact is likely to be extremely pleasurable - I know I spend a lot of time on my PA - it shines like chrome-plate. If you can't get to it to clean it properly, buy a spare, and swap them regularly, taking care not to scratch the piercing with any sharp edges or exposed threads.

( Incidentally, that's another material which should never be used on piecing jewelry )

It's alsopossible that the jewelry is too small - you should be able to move it freely backwards and forwards in the piercing so you can clean all the surface - it may also be worth upsizing to something thicker - it will be easier to keep clean.

I've found that toothpicks or even wooden matchsticks will not rust.
