She can be bred when she goes into heat. To help you decide when to breed her I'll give you some information. When your female goes into heat. She will get a swelled vulva("place") and will bleed out of it blood ranging in color anywhere from milky to red. She may urinate more often and males will be more attracted to her. She can go into heat anywhere from 6 mo to 1 1/2 years of age. Heat at average lasts 3 weeks. About one week going into heat (this stage can last from 1-17 days), and one week in heat(this stage lasts from 3-21 days). As you can see it varys greatly in dogs. You should have a male around from the first day just to be sure. She will go into heat again about 6 months later(again this varys greatly in 4-14 months between heats.) If she does get pregnant she will be pregnant 58-66 days counting from about the time she stopped mating. Also you should not breed a dog nder a year old. Hope this helps!

Jeannie, you should wait until your dog is 1 1/2 to 2 years old so that her body can fully develop and so that she can  be mentally mature to handle the stresses of being a mother.  I have seen an 8mo old cocker spaniel puppy deliver a litter and she did an excellent job as all the puppies survived, but she was clearly stressed and  more overwhelmed than normal.  It seems that smaller dogs go into heat around 6-10months for the 1st time, but larger dogs go into heat for the 1st time around 11-12 months.  Again, your dog will like do well as a mother while she is very young, but it is much harder on her body and her mental health.

I have a 3 yr old Shih-Tzu who has been in heat about 1 1/2 weeks. She is still bleeding. She is only about 6 pounds, but I do want to breed her at least once. I have a male who is also very small. When do I put them together and will she have any problems due to her size. Thanks.

There is not a need to breed dogs today....If you really care about the animals then you would see that thier are way to many dogs in shelters. If people would stop breeding dogs and selling them for a profit(GREED,then we wouldnt have to euthinize so many.

Your dog SHOULD NOT be bred until she is 2.  She should only be bred if she is an asset to the breed and is a purebred from a reputable breeder.  The pups should be carefull homed and you should keep track of them.

you can go to the vet and have a progesterone test done. this will tell you when she is ready to breed. You may have to do a few of them.
I find in many cases the female is ready to breed on the 2nd week. of course this will very from dog to dog.

My dog is in heat, she has like 3 or 4 days left. I tryed breeding her with a toy poodle(she a is minuature poodle), they were at it for like 7 hours. Do you think she's pregnant or should I try to breed her again. The guy could barely reach her but I think they made a connection

NOTE: Her period ended a couple days ago, should i have tried to breed her then??

It is best to wait until you dog goes through at least 1-2 heats before you breed her. If not it could cause some serious problems. I bred one of my pitt bulls after her 3rd heat and she had 13 puppies and everyone of them lived. She was an excellent mother.
