It's so hard when you lose your friend, isn't it?  I spent years alone after my beloved Bagel died of old age.  Eventually I was ready to get another dog.  If you really love dachshunds, get another but a different color if possible.  You will soon see that each dog has its own personality, if you want a clone of your previous dog, you aren't ready.  Don't be in a hurry, go see a lot of different dogs, wait until one of them just feel right, and crawls inside your heart.  I now have a very spit-fire chihuahua, and a very shy one.  I thought the second dog would be like the first in temperament, I was wrong, but it's ok.  I love each of them for who they are, and it breaks my heart to know that someday they will both leave the planet (probably ahead of me).  grief is the price we pay for love.  I think you will find that as toto said, dogs are like kids, each different and wonderful in their own way.

As a pet owner and dog breeder, I can tell you that my dogs are like my children, but with fewer worries.  Of the 10 or so dogs that have been in and out of my life over the years, each were and are special in their own way.  The time I have with them is very important to me.   But their is one that still brings a tear to my eye when I think of her and miss her, she was my buddy. But our life goes on after theirs and our hearts are big enough to love another.  I rarely wait more then a few days before bringing home a new little friend.  I find that their love helps me go on without my old friend. They are in no way a replacement but maybe a distraction from the pain that sometimes never heals.

Sarah,
I am so sorry for your loss.  I cannot imagine the pain you must be feeling.  The best advice I have heard yet, is from Chimama on several subjects.  If and when you decide it is time to get another furry angel, please consider getting him/her from a rescue or animal shelter.  As you may know, there is such a crazy animal overpopulation problem in the US.  Save a life.  It will make the bond between you and your pet that much stronger.

I am Buddist.In Buddism we believe in reincarnation.

Before and after I lost my Golden Retriever I chanted~
           Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo
I chanted with the desire that he comes back to me.The situation that allowed this to happen was unbelievable!I am confident that the this Golden now sitting here right by my side,is also my 1st.They aren't clones,but there are so many similarities.One must wait 8 months before the new Puppy is born.

I talked with many Breeders just about reincarnation (not religion) with Dogs they've had,and many of them believe it happens!

I'm sorry about your dog.  Get a different breed of dog, because if you get one of the same breed, it'll bring back more sad memories. I'm not saying you shouldn't get the same breed, but sometimes you may think your previous dog was better, and it makes you dislike the same breeded dog you have.

In my opinion, there is no better breed. The fact that the breed has no odor, that they are full of love, that they love to be loved - make them the best breed to have. I lost My Cletus at age 15, a year later I lost her sister, Morgan at age 16. Two days after Morgan's death, I found out her house mate - Maggie had terminal cancer. I lost Maggie 2 months later. It has taken me a year to get a new pet. I rescued Scarlett from a puppy-mill and her pup - now named Buster. I miss Cletus, Morgan and Maggie - no other pet will replace them. But, when God was ready for me to have a new pet, she made Scarlett available - and - I got a bonus - Buster. Open your heart - and it will be filled with the love of another doxie - Will never replace what you have lost - just fill your heart with love.

We too lost our beloved Doxie/Chihuahua mix dog Max of 7 years this past weekend unfortunately to a car and an open front door.  We had purchased him for our sons 7th birthday when Max was only 8 weeks old.  He had become another child in our family.  Our hearts are truly broken.  We share the feeling of emptiness and agree with those that say, get another dog.  We already have a prospective adoption in place.  Night one we knew our home was to quiet without a dog and the search was on.  We have been blessed to find a rescue that has a pair of 2 year olds, brother and sister, in need of a home.  We almost purchased an 8 week old that would be available Christmas Eve, however, we feel that the loss of our Max will not be in vain if in his loss lives are saved.

As DoxieLady said there is no better breed.  It has been one week since my beloved Izzaboe passed away.  I am heartbroken and lost without her.  She was 14 years old and the light of my life. Reading the comments and suggestions has helped a little.  Know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.I cannot imagine my life without another Dachshund. I am not quite ready to do it yet but there will be a time that God will send me another dear little soul to love. For now I grieve with you.

We have 4 minies, I love them all the same and I know one day one of them will be gone. It's a day I don't look forward to, so I'm going to injoy them while I have them, and miss them when their gone, I have pictures of all of them and lot's of good memeries. I don't think they can go bad like other breds can.The two yunger ones will kiss and lick me so much I think there is 12 of them on me.

Dogs are truly Angels of God - Their list of service to man is as long in length as in time - Dauchunds are truly a special breed with a mind of their own - My "Heinz Wolfgang" and "Gretchen Heidi" both drive me crazy and shower me with affection - I truly dreed the day they must pass over but that is part of life.

My Benson, was also a doxie. Benson was definetley brought back to me in the body of my new dog. There is no question about it. Him and I were so close I cannot express it. When he passed away, I felt my life was over. I felt I could not go on. When I learned about reincarnation in dogs I was relieved because I felt in my heart Benson would come back to be with me. He did!  He really did! I believe in reincarnation. The proof is in the pudding. Some may read this and think I am crazy, but that is allright. To the woman who said her dog was reincarnated I believe her. My best friend is with me always. His old body gave out, but his spirit remains with me in my new dog. They are so alike to a tea is it erie. They even smell alike....God bless you!

"Sometimes I look for traits in you
Of a little dog you never knew.......
A dog that loved me all her days
And understood in special ways.
But that's not fair to you, you elf;
You're not a substitute; but yourself!
You've eased the loss, soothed the pain
And tugged my laughter home again.
Yet, puppy, at times I almost start
When your eyes recall her to my heart;
You'll never lack for love,r it's clear
Because of her, you're twice as dear."

That being said, things will probably be different. I lost my first dachshund to mast cell tumors 11 months ago, and my mothers dachshund gave birth to 5 puppies 3 months later. We have kept two of them, and I see traits of my first love in both of them. But nobody is like her. You have to give it time, and allow yourself to love again. Love will come, even though the love might not come crashing down like it did with my first dog, Thalia.
