I have an 8 month old choc. lab I just took her to the vet for x-rays, it came back that she has severe hip displasia in the back left leg, also both hind knee joint ligaments are torn.  The surgery is very expensive and I was woundering if there is anyone out there who has this problem with there lab.  Is surgery really needed is there anyway to keep her comfortable without going through all this surgery?

I have a 2 yr. old lab that had to undergo surgery for dysplasia. Before his surgery he was extremely uncomfortable, even w/ pain medication and massages. I am not a medical professional, but in my opinion, surgery is probably very neccessary. Have you talked to more than one vet about the price of the surgery? When my vet told me that Wags would need surgery, and then quoted an outragous fee, I called several different vets and ended up paying almost half the price that I was origionally quoted.

My lab has the same exact thing, I am going to try Ester C and coated asprin.  I also got some horse liniment to rub into his back knees. I also give him a mattress (for lawn chair) to lay on.  I really helps him. I also have a wading pool filled with cool fresh water when the weather is warm.  He loves to sit in it.  I also let him swim at his own pace at the lake. add lots of love and attention and don't let them get too fat.

We had a limp also on our puppy @9-10 months, they ER doc recommended the Cosequin DS and he has been on it since.  Still w/limp when swimming several times a day, but arthritis in the shoulder has been suggested by the vet after x-rays.. he responds well to asprin when this limp happens and usually lasts a day or so...

I have a 2 year old that was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at 6 months old. When we took him for the surgery we also found out that he had OCD. We were refered to Michigan State Vet. Hospital. If we would not have taken him there we would not have known about this. We gave him Glucosamine Chondroitin to help with the pain and discomfort.
