There are different types of firewalls.  First and least expensive is the Software Firewall.  There are free versions on the web, and vendor packages as well.  Most Anti-Virus makers make firewall software as well.

Second and more costly, is the Hardware Firewall.  This item sits after your web conection but before your computer.  Hardware Firewalls are usualy more trustworthy and harder for novice attacks to compromise.

The best is a combination of a Hardware and Software Firewall.  This allows better protection between firmware and corperate updates, as all firewalls need adjusting from time to time.

Remember to never use a default password, always change it and put numbers, letters, and symbols in the password.  This makes it harder for password cracks, and brute force attacks.
