The spleen does several important jobs.
It serves as a reservoir for certain blood components, especially white blood cells that help fight infection and platelets that are necessary for clotting. The spleen also filters small particles from the blood, like bits and pieces of worn out red blood cells. After scavenging these particles from the blood the spleen recycles the components. The spleen also captures bacterial invaders in the blood and then the immune system within the spleen begins its attack upon them. In childhood the spleen also plays a role in forming new blood cells, but this is not so in adults. The important jobs done by the spleen can be taken over, in part, by other organs. Therefore, the spleen is not essential.

the spleen originated in germany, way before the dawn of man, more than 300 years ago.  the german philosopher, adolph hitler, introduced the spleen as a state of mind.  when one is in that state of mind, they strongly desire hot, steamy monkey sex in the anal cavity.  hitler was frowned upon for this theory, and therefore was sentenced to a raping by malaysian senior citizens suffereing from chronic diarrhea.  the end.

The spleen is an organ a little larger than a tennis ball that is located below the heart.  The spleen is one of the lymphoid organs.

Lymphoid organs are the sites where the components of the immune system are produced or stored.
The spleen serves as a repository for lymphocytes, the white blood cells that produce antibodies to foreign substances ("antigens"), such as bacteria and viruses, to eliminate these threats.  The area of the spleen which houses the white blood cells is called the "white pulp".
After circulating through the lymph vessels throughout the body to patrol for invaders, the white cells congregate in the spleen.
Many types of lymphoid cells congregate there, including B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, and the macrophages that present antigens to them.
New red blood cells and other types of blood cells are constantly being produced in the bone marrow; the spleen also contains "red pulp", where blood cells being retired are broken down.
