I have a 3 1/2 year old female IG and she began having seizures about a year ago.  She had two last summer in about a 4 month span, and she just had another yesterday.  The vet did tests today to rule out other problems, but she thinks it may be epilepsy.  I was wondering if this was common with this breed, and if so, what, other than pheno barbitol, might be effective in limiting the frequency.  I want to hold off as long as possible on medication, because the vet says it is extremely harsh on their system.  If anyone has had any experience with this type of ailment, I would appreciate any feedback or info that might help.

Thanks,

John

I have two dogs with epilepsy. My cocker spaniel has been on pheno barb. about 8 yrs and is doing well. However my husky has just gotten some liver damage from it, the larger the dog the larger the dose and the harder to control. We were in the process of switching him to Potasium Bromine which does not have the side effects. However since he was having siezures weekly and it takes 6 months to obtain a theraputic level of this drug we are hoping that him being at half the level will be enough to prevent severe siezures. If you need to put your dog on meds because of the severity of the siezures I would go first for the potasium bromine. It is a more expensive alternative to Pheno barb but not damaging to the dog..good luck
