Well Yorkies are loving and very energetic dogs. They have a "look at me" personality. Their hair is silky and can grow very long. The standard size is under 7lbs. They are also very affectionate dogs.

The breed standard for the Yorkshire terrier is under 7 lbs as published in the standard by the AKC and Canadian Kennel Club.  Over 7 lbs is considered to be oversized and should be sold for pet only never to be bred.  Unfortunately, people who don't know better will breed them and they will produce some pretty big puppies.  So you can see a 14 or more lbs Yorkie but this is not reputable breeding if you are purposely breeding too large.  On the flip side, very small, under 4 lbs, is considered to be very undersized.  The breed standard does not cite a minimum desireable weight or size but reputable breeders consider under 4 lbs very undersized.  This is where the 'teacup' terminology comes in by breeders who don't know anything about Yorkies or the breed standard and likely don't care.  Teacup is a clever marketing ploy to sell an undersized representative of the breed.  In any purebred breed of dog, you can get oversized and undersized representatives of the breed, not just in Yorkies.  Inventing names for them doesn't make them something else, they are still a Yorkie, classed as a toy or companion dog.  An undersized Sheltie is still a Sheltie not a toy sheltie etc

Anyone that is a good breeder knows that AKC says a yorkie is 4 to 7 lbs. Anyone that try to sell a yorkie that is bigger, buyer beware they care nothing of the breed except to make money. Yorkie under 4 lbs is also bad IF YOU BREED IT BECAUSE YOU WONT A SMALLER YORKIE TO MAKE MONEY, WHY TAKE A CHANCE AND BREED A DOG THAT IS TO SMALL, THEN YOU HAVE TO WORRY IF IT HAS TO HAVE A C-SECTION. THEN YOU HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE YORKIE DYING. If SOMEONE WOULD  BREED A SMALL YORKIE TO MAKE MONEY NOT CARING IF THE MOTHER YORKIE LIVES OR DIES IS NO BREEDER BUT A SCAM ARTIST MAKING money OFF POOR LITTLE YORKIEs THAT LOVE WITH OUT ASKING ANY THING OF YOU. THEY ARE GREAT HOUSE DOGS. If SOMEONE SAYS THEY CAN'T BE TRAINED DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. I RAISE YORKIE, I START BRUSHING them AT TWO WEEKS, I PAD TRAIN THEM AT TWO WEEKS. when MY YORKIES LEAVE THEY KNOW WHAT TO DO AND NOT DO,AND THEY LOVE ME TOO.

Yorkies don't shed like typical dogs do.  Their coat is more like our own hair.  In other words, when you pet a labrador or a greyhound, you will have hair (fur) on your hands that you might shake off.  When you stroke a yorkie, you will not.  I have 3 yorkies and 2 chinese cresteds; I can wear black OR white clothing without worry of having dog hair on me.  BUT, yorkies do require daily GROOMING--brushing to keep their beautiful coat from matting.

Li, I want to thank you for offering the most accurate info regarding "teacup" and over-sized/undersized Yorkies! I grow quite weary of seeing ads and receiving calls for "teacup" Yorkies... as if that was a specific breed of this wonderful dog.

Kristi, you will find that healthy Yorkies do NOT shed, another trait that I dearly love :-)

Some of you [no offense] seem to be a little mis-informed..
Yorkshire terriers should only weigh up to around 7 lbs.  14 or 15 is definately too big. thats not saying that a 14 pound yorkie wouldnt make a great pet, it just doesnt fit the standard.
yorkies do not shed.. their hair is like a persons and needs to be washed regularly [weekly or so] with special shampoo and conditioning treatments.  it does however require a lot of brushing, unless you get it clipped into a puppy cut [good for a PET].
also, yorkies do not really come in different colors.. all *should* be black with tan markings as puppies, but as they grow the tan spreads out through their body, and as they age they become much lighter, especially females who have given birth.
i love love LOVE the breed and if u have any questions you can email me at hmayer615@yahoo.com

Hi, as far as yorkies and weight, I don't understand why some breeders get so upset about calling undersized yorkies teacups, or tinnies. No one is trying to fool any one and I don't believe any one is being fooled. If you know that a puppy is going to be undersized as a adult, then it needs to be called something. Why not teacup! That is the size. People want smaller than 10 pound yorkies. I have seen more Yorkie breeders fool people by telling them the puppy they just bought will stay under 5 pounds when they know the pup will grow to be 7 pounds. The breeders are the ones that for some reason think a 3 or 4 pound yorkie is worth 2000.00 or more. and a 7 pound yorkie is worth 900.00. I have talked to many yorkie breeders that brag on how small their tinnies are. Yet every yorkie breeder will get mad when any one questions them on how big the pup will end up. all the breeders out their that say their is no teacups or tinnies, should sell all the pups for the same price. If you want to clam they are undersized and most often sickly, then why are you asking for twice the price for a inferior pups.

I am doing some research on Yorkies.. I have tons of questions... If anyone could answer these, I would greatly appreciate it.

I have found a wide range of pricing, whats the difference between a $700 yorkie and a $3000 yorkie?

What is the average life span?

What is the average amount of pups they deliver?

How old are the yorkies when they start breeding?

How many times a year can/do they normally breed?

Why is DNA testing done?

Does different weights mean some are healthier than others?

hey! Li was right about tea cup yorkie, it's a ploy to make money. All they are, are undersize dogs. Of course they are adorable and small. but they also take SO much care until they are about 6 months old. Up until then you have have to feed them every 2-3 hours and you HAVE to watch their sugar level If you don't they will crash and die. Basically someone MUST be with them 24/7. If this is to difficult for you...DON'T get it! Not unless you want to blow around 2,000 dollars for a runt! They are wonderful dogs! i love them! The best part is that they shed VERY little to not at all!

my boyfriend and i purchased a yorkie about 5 months ago.  we have the cutest little male yorkie named Bentley.  He is 6 months old, 6.2lbs, extremely sweet, loves to cuddle, always in need of our attention (always gets a lot of attention!), very loyal, smart and is the perfect little dog to call our 'baby'. He gets along great with children and loves to play with other animals. Hair is very soft and silky, doesnt shed at all, but can look messy if not brushed.  Doesn't bark much, always lets me know when someones at the door.  He has a great personality- but can be snobby at times... if he's yelled at, he won't talk to you for hours! He gets upset very easily and whines, even cries! (poor baby) but when hes not in a bad mood hes absolutley wonderful to be with and cuddle in front of the tv with! i recommend everyone to go out and get their own baby yorkie...

I have been wanting a Yorkie for So Long !!! And i finally got one... i have no regrets. this is the cutest, smartest, and loyalist dog I've ever come across! if you are thinking about getting one i say --> "GO FOR IT"... you'll have absolutley no regrets, and how can you say no to that face?  there absolutley ADORABLE . The most they can weigh is 7-8 pounds. when they are pup's they are black and brown. but while they grow the color changes, to a steel-blue color. they are very affectionate dogs. but may not be very suitable for children that are rough, and very young. they are very fragil animals and must be cared for gently.
there are also teacup yorkies, (i have one) adn i prefer the teacup more then the bigger ones... if this is a dog that you are intrested in then PLEASE make sure you have the right habitatfor your yorkie ! our they become very bored, and this could lead to " dull personalites " and bordem. so  make sure if you are getting a yokie that you are all set for him/her.. :-)

I have a friend who has Yorkies and children aged 2-7 and they are WONDERFUL together. It isn't' fair of ANYONE to say Yorkies should not be around children.  That is utterly ridiculous! It is the parent's responsibility to raise respectful children! Any dog can be around any aged children, if both are raised properly and taught respect!

i breed yorkshire terriers they do not shed they have great temperaments but i wouldn't recommend having more then 1 male in a house as they tend to fight unless raised together. there is no such thing as a t-cup just the x-small that shouldn't be bred or in my opinion be produced though are cute the smaller most of the time the more the health problems i do have a 3lb male and he is as healthy as an ox but i would never try to make anything smaller than that i never breed a female less than 5.5lbs thats just me. i do health checks on all my dogs and make sure that they are breeding quality its hard work i don't recommend it :) but i do recommend that people get yorkies as long as you don't have small kids as if provoked or injured they may bite they are great dogs and come in all colors my favorite is the silver but more common is the black and tan.

Is it true that in some cases solid black yorkies are possible? I read somewhere that they were with some type of recessive gene. I have been searching and searching. My little guy is and he looks like a yorkiepoo too me. Any help??

I don't have a yorkie but i'mdying for one. yorkies are very cute and i'vebeen researching for a while now, as i am now. to tell you the truthe, to me i dont think yorkies look to good with long hair though so if you get a yorkie i suggest that you get it trimmed now and then because first you can get fleas easier and you must spends hours daily brushing. Not many people have that time but i guarantee you you will love a yorkie puppy.

I have a wonderful male yorkie who is also a great hunter.  He is big for his breed, 16 lbs, but is great and resilient play partner for my grand kids and my step-son's female brindle boxer.
I have found out when they are as big as he (both parents were under 7 lbs), it is the old original genetics of the breed coming out (Broken-haired Scotch Terriers).
We got him after we had to put down my 15.5 year old American Cocker and just before we had to put down our 21 year old Chihuahua -- he came from a home we knew (a very good registered breeder - we saw him a week after he was born, only male of the litter) and have to admit, after meeting others with the "tea-cups", would not wish to have anything smaller!
He is bright, intelligent and makes everyone smile -- and you will enjoy.
Cheers!

Hi, I am being offered a yorkie (teacup) due to the woman moving and not being able to keep the dog. I need to know if yorkies are re-trainable, as I'm told this dog (due to bad training) is not fully housebroken. Can I teach the dog to use the outdoors and if so, how long will it take?

Thanks~
