That is no simple feat. It is better to learn from somone in real life since the game can get very complicated in some cases. If you really want to learn online, try getting apprentice or MWS and find somone willing to show you online. (my email is MillMaster2002@aol.com)

if you don't want to read the rules, and you don't want to use the demo's ... are you going to just put the cards to your forehead and absorb the game mechanics?  how about you go to your local card shop and have some 12 y/o kid beat the snot out of you until you get so frustrated that you cry and want to quit forever!  at least you'll learn that way.

I'm just starting off too but i know the answer to your question.  If the card has a black border around it it is common.  If the card has a white border around it, it is uncommon.  And if the card has a gold border around it, it is rare.

That's wrong.  There will be a little figure right below the picture and to the right.  It might be a knife, spider, skull, etc.  If that little figure is black, the card is common.  If it's silver, it's uncommon.  If it's gold, then it's rare.

Only cards from the past 4 years or so have this symbol which tells rarity.  Mercadian Masques, I believe, was the first.

The border color tells you if the card is from  a core set (white) or an expansion set (black).

MtG is really fun. I mostly play it on MTGPlay online but sometimes I cannot get hold of anyone to play with. Anyone play MTGPlay and play Ravinca Block? I mean MTGPlay is free compare to Wizards with a cost per month.

the site magicthegathering.com will definitely help for any question. the silver borders around a card mean that it is from a joke set and shouldn't be played seriously (they are very fun in casual) the black borders are cards that come from a set and the white come from the core game edition. a great way to learn to play is to go to a local card shop that does magic on Friday night and ask someone to teach you, if you don't want to read rules or play demos.

how do you actually affect the opponent's 30 points?
Isn't it like as long as there is a card you can block there attack and the extra damage affects you?
