how do you know when your chihuahua is sick? when I pick him up he sometimes whimpers like i'mhurting him. also, how do you potty train him? we found him out in the streets and the vet said he's about 2-4 years old, so he's been peeing everywhere. help

Your vet should check him for luxating patellas, also known as slipped kneecaps.  This is something toy breeds and especially chihuahuas are prone to, it means their knees can slip out of the socket.  Ouch!

Potty-training at this age could be a challenge.  I suggest you use the same technique as you would a new puppy, use a crate or a room with an easily cleaned floor, such as a tile bathroom.

Rather than go into it here, I suggest you get the book Chihuahuas for Dummies which is the best one I know on the care and training of these adorable creatures.

My baby chi does that sometimes too. He wimpers if you pick him up too quick or if he gets scared (if I walk around the corner quick and startle him, then he sees me and calms down.)You just have to give him lots of love, hold him and pet him very gently, even sing him something!

My chihuahua's been sick for a few days now.  She started off vomitting one day (Thanksgiving ham!  I was away for Thanksgiving and my boyfriend announced that she loved it! #@$@$!) Now she won't eat but a few bites of her regular food and she's developed the shakes.  She had trouble pooping at first and is now almost regular.  But I'm most worried about the shakes and her loss of appetite. Any suggestions?  She's still under medication from her last vet visit a few weeks ago.

I think your chi is probably just nervous. give him some time. He will come around. Potty training. puppies, none the less dogs, is always a challenge. I suggest you buy potty pads, either at petsmart or some other pet store. Start out with them close to the door, then move them ever so slightly to the door, and by no time your chi will be going to the door when he needs to do his business. My baby chi. is a little girl, and she sometimes. cries, but give them time. =)
