To whom it may concern:

I am a student at an international school, doing the International Baccalaureate program. As one of my languages, I am studying Dutch and I have to complete an internal assessment of a piece of literature, which I am doing on The Chosen written by Chaim Potok. Within this analysis I was hoping to be able to explore all aspects of the proverbs presented at the beginning of every part of the book, which have been extracted from the Talmud. I would greatly appreciate it if you could explain the following:

-   “If a word is worth one coin, silence is worth two”

-   “I was a son to my father…
And he taught me and said to me,
‘Let your heart hold fast my words’…”

-   “Silence is good everywhere, except
in connection with the Torah”

There is a common theme throughout the book which is silence, why is silence so important in the beliefs of the Talmud?
If you could answer any of these questions it would be much appreciated,
