How old does a male basset hound have to be before he is ready to begin breeding??

Just curious why you want to breed your dog?  Does he come from champion blood lines?  Does he meet the breed standard?  Will this breeding serve to better the breed?  Has he had his elbows and hips tested?  Eyes tested?  Do you belong to a Basset breed club in your area?
Breeding should be taken very seriously.  There is so much more involved than simply putting a female and male together, and waiting for the outcome.  Please consider all angles before breeding.
Responsible breeders already have homes lined up BEFORE the puppies are born.  Responsible breeders will take back their puppies at any time for any reason.  Responsible breeders sell their "pet quality" puppies under limited registration, to ensure the puppies get altered and not bred.
Please think long and hard before breeding.  There are so many unwanted dogs in shelters and rescues already.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN A DOG IS IN HEAT AND READY TO BREE?

I don't believe anyone asked for a lecture.  To register a pup out of the litter the male has to be 8 months old, however you should wait until the sire is about 2 years old just to make sure that he has all the qualities that you are looking for in a breeder.

I own two labs that I bred.  They are full blooded labs, and from really good lines.  They are not champions and will never be shown.  But I live in an area were lots of people hunt.  These labs are made for that work.  While I agree that not everyone should breed, you have to remember, that not every dog is bred just for the show quality.

confused_dog_owner.  I'm sorry to see you get attacked like that.  I didn't see anywhere in your question that you WANTED to breed your dog.  Just a simple question as to how old does the male need to be before he CAN breed.  Very good question, maybe to keep unwanted litters.  Shame on the people that think they know everything.

It amazes me that there so much emphasis put on responsbility of dog breeding. Don't misunderstand me, I believe in ethical treatment of animals (not beating, starving, etc..).  However, they are just animals. Not humans. And it was a lecture you received. I recently took a cat that I had to the animal shelter that I no longer wanted. I had the cat for a few years and while she was a decent pet, she was not a good mother and I did not want to spend the money to get her fixed. She was just a mixed breed that someone gave me. When I took her to the shelter, you would think I was aborting a child with the treatment I got. Oh, my mistake, I wouldn't have gotten this kind of treatment if it had only been a "fetus". I thought I was doing the right thing by putting the cat down and preventing more kittens from being birthed. But you can forget it next time. I wouldn't put myself through that again

I'm with Jenn.  Breeding is serious business.  If you are lame enuf to have an un altered pet, you need to be responsible enuf to care for the results.  Pets aren't disposable when you "get tired" of them or you don't have money to get them altered.  There a MILLION groups out there who will help with or entirely cover the cost of altering.  Then the shelters won't be so full.  I work in rescue and it's people like this that keep me busy.  I WANT to be laid off for lack of work, but it's not to be as long as all these animals go unaltered and produce more unwanted animals.

I think the lecture was unwarranted, but had good information. However, I came here just to find out how old the Sire needs to be as well, and I was sad to see such anger and suspicion. I am going to breed my 3 year old English Mastiff and the prospective Sire is 1 year old. I am breeding her to sell the puppies (and to keep one or two myself). Breeding dogs is a BUSINESS and shame on all of you who act as though we don't care just because we do it.

WOW hmm i'mspeachless ..i just came across this site and for everyone's interest and pet owners .... if you know your breed and you have done alot of research you already know the answers to some of these questions and if you dont than maybe you need to do more research and talk to breeders that have had more experience than you and they also can answer your questions .... if your goin to breed ... breed to better the breed not the greed and if you dont know everything there is about your pet .... your not ready for this yet...neither is your pet ...a pet is a life time committment and are suppose to be your best friends for life ... maybe think about this first DONT breed dogs that are related unless your willing to keep all the puppies cause of some sort of deformity and dont breed if you dont know the answers for your questions

Well, I happen to agree, noone should be attacked for asking a question. I have a registered male boxer and I intend to breed him, anyone who has a problem with that can just mind their own business. I came here to ask how old he needs to be the first time he is bred. Oh, yes to answer your question he has papers and all out the wazoo.

Holy Crap! I only stumbled on this page by accident, all I wanted to know was how long Basset Hounds are in heat for but I doubt I'll ask that question considering the lecture I read before. We are someday going to breed our dog with my sisters but not yet because he's still to little but not for anything other than the fact that we love bassets and want to share them with our family and friends. Lay off the lectures and let people enjoy their pets.

This is sad I came here to see how old a male dog has to be in order to breed. Yes I want to breed my male dog with my female dogs. I am a responsible owner and my family would like puppies. And if no one wants them I would be happy to keep them.He just asked a question and you guys start pointing fingers that he wants to breed. what if he DOESN'T want to breed. He might just be curious. I have a purebred male daschund, and a pure-bred AKC champion bloodlines female Japanese Chin. If it is there choice its there choice. Some people want to breed its their choice. I am a volunteer at the Milo Foundation. So I know. I help animals. I am in love with them!

I am also one of the individuals who just wanted some info on Basset Hounds as I have just gotten a gorgeous basset hound puppy, but I have to agree with the others who are disappointed in this site.  This is supposed to be a site in which people are able to ask questions and get straight answers.  While I do believe completely that a person should think very carefully about breeding and its true one should be responsible and breed only those dogs who qualify yet I also have to say that a lecture is not what is needed and the person who asked the question should be able to have the question answered.  I would like to know this too.  Not that I am thinking of breeding(in-fact quite the opposite) When is the right time to start breeding?  And a question I would like answered, at what age do I have my male Basset neutered? No lectures please, that is why I visit the vet...

I think people can make their own choice on whether to breed or not, you dont need to lecture, thats rude no one asked for one. Our basset is pregnant, and she is champion blood line, and registered :) but we didnt mean to make her preg. she got loose...and their gonna be so cute and lovable!

First-off, I think you are mostly all a bunch of right-wing liberal pansies trying to force your will on others trying to get simple information. None of you know how to answer a question. A lecture only needs to be made when it is asked for-not when a question is asked. Do not assume that you self-righteous pricks are the only responsible breeders in the world. To answer a few questions about bassets: 35-40 days for pregnancy x-rays, gestation is 60-63 days-start worrying after 65, yes you can breed two red and white bassets together-after assuring they are not closely related(I do not condone linebreeding, but I will not lecture those that do)and most likely you will end up with tricolor puppies.

I am mystified by the people on here. I only found this site on Ask Jeeves and the rudeness on this site is unbelievable. I went to find out about breeding my Miniature Schnauzer because I have about 7 or 9 people who have been asking us for a few years to have one of her off springs. I would never create a puppy mill or give them to people who are not serious about having a dog. Some of you act like your are the "king of the Dogs" because you may have a few ribbons or something. Sometimes people just want a nice sweet loving dog not an uppity prize for a pet! Relax people! Be nice on here!!

Dogs are ready to breed when they are 6-8 months old. Yes you can breed a red and white basset with another red and white basset but they most likely wont all be red and white.I would wait until the 40-45 day mark on ex-raying your dog so you can get a better number that is more correct since then you might actually be able to see the skeletal structures.

I also would like more information on breeding basset male.  I've been contacted by a couple of owners with females.  My boy is only 6 months old, so I told them I wasn't interested at this point.  But I was told by the breeder that I got him from that he was show quality, and the people asking also feel that their females are show quality animals.  I'm brand new to this and any information would be greatly appreciated.

"Jenn, Brookie, No Lectures, Annoyed":
You are all very over-opinionated and need to learn how to spell before you lecture anyone on how to breed or keep a dog.  And by the way you also sound somewhat borderline schizophrenic due to how you overreacted to the questions that people have on this page.  You obviously don't know how to blog.  Also I will answer a few of these questions as I have been in the area of Breeding BASSET HOUNDS for over 30 years now.  You must wait until the female is at least 18 months old and the male as well.  Also, I personally do not believe in X-ray in any dog due to genetic alterations that they cause, think of it this way, Why would you get an x-ray if you were pregnant?  Ultra-sounds are much safer.  The only advice I would have to give is that if your female dog is having her first litter, you may want to get an x-ray the last few days of her pregnancy to make sure she will not have any complications.  And to all that thought they had to lecture everyone on this page; incompletely and incompetently at that; I say get psychological help.  If anyone has a question about dogs, please feel free to ask me, as I will not badger you as long as you have a question about your dog.  Thank you.
