My little Chalupa got her very first period  yesterday. Her "female part" got so big. Such a little dog with such a big weewee. I did read here that it last two weeks and happens about twice a year. I thought  I had a little more time before I had to worry about it. She is only nine months old. Oh well, off to do laundry. Take care.

This should get better in subsequent heats, as she will take more care to keep herself clean.  One breeder I know uses preemie pampers to 'diaper' her females when they are not going to be bred that time around.

I have to put in my standard request that unless you are an experienced breeder, it is kinder to both you and the dog to have her spayed.  Many females should not be bred, and to have her go through heats without any means of getting 'satisfaction' is cruel.

Nothing personal, it's the same spiel I give to everyone I come across with a fertile female chi.  I know you care very much for your little Chalupa.

Willa,
I am proud your little chalupa is growing up and got her first period.  It is a special thing in a dog's life, I know nothing about chihuahuas, except for how cute they are, and it is good to know someone's little puppy is growing up.  Felicidades!

Thank You for the warm thoughts and kind words Chihuahua Mama. I got sooo happy for little Chalupa because it's always rewarding to see our children growing up correctly and happy. It makes me feel like I must be doing something right! I'm sooo glad we have this site to come and chat. It may not seem like a big deal to most people but I'm grateful other people can relate to my emotions.  Take care

My best advice is to look through the FAQ for threads that talk about new chihuahuas, and of course my traditional recommendation that you get the book Chihuahuas for Dummies.  It is the best book I have on the care and maintenance of these adorable little creatures.  Keep up on this board, and ask questions, it shows you care.  Welcome to the family!

I would like to know how long does the female stay on there period? When is it a good age to breed your female? My female is 8 months old. My male is 2 years old.

Hi Cahita:)I believe I read somewhere here on this site that female dogs have their heat cycles twice a year.Their periods last about two weeks.  Your female puppy is eight months old...well then her first heat cycle can come along any day now. Two years old is a good age for a dog to have puppies but with sooo  , sooo many dogs needing a loving home. Why add to the over population? Plus Chihuahuas are fragile  and even experienced breeders lose the pups and/or momma dog during birth sometimes.

Get your girls spayed before they get their periods! I thought I learned from my first Chihuahua and then my new baby girl surprised me by starting at only 9 months(my oldest was close to a year).  It's so messy! I have to put old sheets on the couch and pull up my rugs.  She's also heart broken that she can't sleep with me right now either, I wish I had gotten her spayed when she was 7 or 8 months.  Please learn from my mistake.  Also, my oldest was so happy after getting fixed, she was like a little kid again, not even thinkn' about boys! :-)

my partner and i are having my mom's female chihuahua over coz she is in the heat. The males in my mom's house were going totally nuts. that's why we have Yoyo over our house and we have a huge problem with her in the house because of the bleeding and if we keep her in her little cage house, she would cry non stop. we can't sleep at night and if she can't see us because we're away, she would cry like nobody's business. We really don't know how to help her... :(

Sonia, my vet told us that we should always let any female dog have their first period before getting them spayed. That way it doesn't affect the dogs growth and development.

Another benefit to spaying your dog sooner rather than later, besides avoiding the mess, and the dog avoiding the discomfort, is the dog's longterm good health.

For every heat cycle a dog goes through without breeding, the chances that she will develop mammary cancer due to estrogen overload later in life greatly increases.

I had a strange incident about an hour ago. I own two chihuahuas, both female and I think are less than a year old. One is extremely outgoing and affectionate the other is very shy but still affectionate if the other doesn't try taking the spotlight. I was holding and cuddling the affectionate one and out of no-where the shy one tried to attack her and wound up biting my hand. I had to keep them away from eachother for about an hour. She's acting scared of me now, although she's laying next to me and letting me pet her. The one she attacked is sitting on my lap and they're getting along. I don't think they're on their period, but does this have anything to do with their puberty or is it more of a territorial thing?
