The signs are a swelled vulva,(this is the bottom "part" in the backside) discharge, from the same place, that is bloody in color but may turn to a milky color later on. Also my dog urinates more often in this time. She seems to get a bit fatter too. The best time to spray your dog is 6 months but better late then never. You can find some vets that will spray her during heat though this is rather frowned on.

Your dog may be in heat. If the swelling continues following a bloody discharge then she is in heat. Consult your vet if this happens.

Its ok if she is in heat, just don't let any males near her for atleast a month until you are positive she has moved out of it. I wouldn't even leave her unattended outdoors. I've seen male dogs dig under and climb over fences to get to a female in heat. An unexpected visit could be dangerous and very costly if an abortion is needed. Even after the swelling has gone down and if there is no visable discharge, she may still be able to get pregnant. To be sure, count 30 days from the day you noticed her in heat. usually dogs will come into between 6-8 months, so she sounds right on time. Most vets would recommend spaying her before she comes into her first heat, but waiting until she passes through it will cause no harm.
