Is there any way to get my Jack Russel to get along with other dogs?  Why does she get along with some dogs and not others?

You can't force a dog to like another dog.  She may like/not like a dog by how dominant it is on her. If you own a dog she doesn'tlike and they will have to learn how to get along then you could try an animal behavior book. Good luck! Tanisha

Jack Russell's are Terriers.  Terriers are hunting breeds that were required to be brave and game.  It says in the standard that Jack Russells do not get along with other dogs.  You are trying to go against the breed, and it won't work.  It's probably a dominance problem.  She wants to be the dominant dog, and the other dog does too.  Can't do a thing about that other than keep them apart.

Jack Russells are not like other dogs.  You really need to be careful about bringing another dog into the family.  I have had two dogs killed from dog fighting.  NO, NO, NO they do not always get better after a couple of weeks.  The one dog was killed by a dog that loved her dearly, licked and cleaned her, and then attacked her for some reason and killed her.  If you are insistent on getting another dog, you better be sure to get a breed that is very mellow and easy-going.  If they don't get along, one will have to go, or you could come home to a dead, mauled dog.  Be prepared for that and ask yourself if it is worth it?  I hate to sound like a wet blanket, but I will never ever forget the sight I encountered from losing my two dogs.

My JRT is very aggressive toward other male dogs. He hasn't been around female dogs but has been raised since 8 weeks with our other neutered terrier. They get along for the most part but it can get a little wild. Skipper (my JRT) likes to clean Bandits ears. (Bandit is 13 years old.) When Bandit doesn't like it he lets Skip know and then watch out.

I'm getting a jack Russell puppy soon and we already have a Labrador (8 yrs) we've already had a jack Russell puppy together with a Labrador and they are fine together, if you just have the patience to train them to know and love each other like i did, then the dogs will get on fine. But if you are not sure then keep them apart, it may just be luck!!!

Labradors are usually good natured dogs that get along well with other dogs.  Who came first, the lab or the Jack.  Sometimes an older mellow dog (lab) works out well when you add a Jack puppy.  Some jacks get along well with other dogs, I have a friend that has a whole house full of dogs, predominantly terriers, and greyhounds.  They all coexist pretty peacefully.  If your dog has a tendency to fight though, that will not change.  It can escalate too, to the point that someone is irrevocably injured.  I have a mother and daughter, where the daughter growls and is aggressive with her mother and her own sons.  The mother will not make a move at all on the daughter and merely puts her grandsons in their place (the mother/grandmother was a pretty aggressive dog before).  The sons (I have three) usually get along, but when they get really scrappy, someone usually gets hurt, so far it hasn't required a vet.  I keep them kenneled separately when I'm not home.  I just want people who may not know it, to understand that you can't train that kind of aggression out of a Jack Russell.  Either you are lucky or you aren't.  Accept it if you aren't and take precautions.  Go into it with both eyes wide, very wide, open.

My Jack loves our Pikanese 99% of the time.  Then all of sudden we hear the most horrible fight and the Jack is attacking the Pikanese.  The Pikaenese is 1 year older than the 6 month old Jack and was like a suragate mother to the Jack when we brought her home as a puppy.  After the attack the Jack feels bad and even will go up to the other dog and kiss her face all over.  What can we do?

I have a Jack (4 yrs old male), 2 chis (8 yr old female, 7 yr old male nutered) and a laso mix (15 yr old female spayed). I got my Jack as a puppy, they all get along most of the time, since fixing the male chi. The fights, where I was usually the one bit, occured when the female chi was in heat, about every 18 months.  Now, the two males get into it rarely, but, when they do, its usually over a treat. My Jack is very calm, loving and tries to be the center of attention.  I know all Jacks are different, I feel very lucky to have one that is not a really hyper dog.  You need patience and maybe will have to make a really hard choice, which dog(s) you want to keep and which you need to find a new home for, usually where they are the only pet.            Good Luck

i have a 4 year old pit and a 18 month old  JRT. They have been together since Savannah (the JRT) was 4 weeks old.Within the past 5 or 6 days Savannah has become aggressive with the pit. They get along fine in the yard, but not in the house. I've always kept them both in the house and everyone has gotten along fine until now. I'm considering making both of them stay outside. If I can't spoil both of them I won't spoil either one.

everyone could REALLY benefit from watching "the dog whisperer" on the National Geographic Channel.  how a dog acts is about 99% up to the owner being the calm assertive of the pack.
check it out!

I have a friend who was given a Jack Russel and thought wow, what an intelligent dog.  It comes around to my place on a regular basis but my friend gets upset because he's afraid his JRT might get picked up by the pound man and would have to pay $200 to have him released.  I noticed every time the dog comes around to my place, I chained him until my friend returns as requested but I noticed he was being cruel to him and there's no excuse for that.  So this time when the Jack Russel turned up, I gave him a bit of tucker as I thought he appeared to be a bit hungry but it disappeared 15 minutes before my friend turned up and he asked me why I didn't tie him up. My reply to him was "I didn't think he would run away."  The truth was I couldn't be bothered tying him up because I got sick of his being cruel to the dog.

I hate my Jack Russell... they are the most hyper, annoying dogs in the world.  Stubborn SOBs.  I would recommend letting you dog fight a pit bull and die.

My Jack Russell is a 3 yr Female,  she gets along with the 2 chihuahua'smy roommate has, probably because they where brought in the home the same time and raised together...she however does tend to be territorial, and the Chi's understand their limits, though one seems to like pushing it some time...other dogs she has been in contact or seen or near she become agressive,  and wants to fight.   we did puppy sit a lab pup only 8weeks old and she actually took a nurturing role toward it...but in general she hates dogs, loves people....

hi there i have a JRT we got him from Wood Green quite a while back so we havent had him since he was a puppy. He always seems to want to attack other dogs when they come near. We take him for walks where there wont be other dogs as he just barks and goes up on his hind legs. He used to be very aggressive to but he is gradually starting to become more and more friendly. I dont care about the fact i cant walk him where there might be other dogs i am just worried in case he ever does meet a dog that he thinks he can attack and he does and ends up hurting the other dog or himself.

We Are Very Careful When He Is Out On Walks So I Am Not To Worried Just Thought I Would Tell My Story.

I have a cat 1 year old, a Jack Russel 2 years old and just got a mix breed puppy (Jack Russel x Husky). All of them are female.

First I had to get the Jack Russel to get along with the cat. It took me about a week and they are fine now. In that case you have the give the dog a lot of attention when the cat is around, learning the dog that it is a good thing to have the cat around.

The new puppy and the Jack Russel also seem to get along. The one thing I noticed though is that they should not be left alone with bones or treats that they both enjoy, because this can lead to fights with both being quite dominant. Rather give them other toys to play with together when you are not around and give them a bone etc. when you are supervising.

Also to help your dogs get along is obedience training and team activities.
