My 12 yr old shih tzu is doing more than snorting its almost gagging but not quite. Its almost like a cough or cold. I'm concerned because she has been doing it for over a week now almost constantly.

As with any type of behavior that you feel is unusual, see a vet first.

If there seem to be no health problems, then your Shih Tzu is talking to you.  This is a very common trait of the breed.  I have two males one does not do it much but the other is constantly doing it.  He almost seems to prefer it to barking.  There is nothing wrong with this it just seems a little strange at first.  If you talk back to him you will find over time that he talks back to you and the sound will be different with excitment, etc.

my shih tzu does the same thing when he gets excited and the vet told me that some small breed dogs have problems in the cartilage in the trachea and it constricts when they get excited and makes them cough. he said it usually doesnt cause too many problems so i wouldnt worry too much.  gluck
