I owned a VW Golf 1999 automatic 1.6 ltr. The car has done about 81000km. The problem is the auto gear does not get engaged immediately when I put the gear from Reverse(R) to Drive(D) or from Parking(P) to Drive(D). It took between 1 to 2 seconds for the gear to get engaged. Does anyone has this problem and how to fix it.

I have a 1996 Volkswagen Golf, and have noticed the same thing, but I suspect that this is due largely in part to the newer Golfs being an electrically controlled vehicle. Some things are just like this; this is not necessarily a problem, just a nuisance, I guess. I wouldn't recommend switching gears from P to D, or R to D, and slamming on the accelerator, anyway. It is recommended to wait several seconds. If you read your owner's manual, it does note that you should not accelerate while you are switching gears at all, and must provide a reasonable (1-3 sec.) period to let your engine adjust to the change. Don't worry about this; it's only normal in an automatic transmission.

For the first person, you will need a brand new gear box if you want it fixed.

I've just bought a Golf 1.4 S. In the morning it takes 2/3 attempts to start and I've also noticed that the clock goes back to 00.00 after starting. Could anyone suggest why this is ?
