We just saw a miniature German Shepherd last week in  St. Martin. It was truly adorable so we stopped and asked the French couple who owned it what kind of dog it was. We thought it looked like a perfect miniature Shepherd. They told us it was a miniature German Shepherd. We had never heard of one so are trying to research the breed. I do now know that the breed exists.

I had two female German Shepherds that were smaller than most (around 45-50 lbs.), but I think they were just the smallest puppies in their litters. Can't say for sure, though, as one was adopted at ten years of age and the other at nine months.

Sometimes, there are dwarf puppies in a litter, but breeders don't intentionally breed for GSDs of this size. Also, I've seen many mixes at shelters that looked exactly like Shepherds in a smaller form.

Yes.  I've seen one at a Christmas party in Missouri.  The dog is owned by a local billionaire.  I was told the daughter purchased the dog for her parents in Europe.  I can't seem to find them anywhere though.  It was exactly like my shepherd- same character and appearance, but about 30-40 pounds lighter.

Yes there was an article printed in "Current Science" which previewed a breeder who had some of these very cute puppies.  It seems they do not get much larger than a pomerainian.

There isn't really such a thing as a miniature German Shepherd. However sometimes on the rare occasion a dwarf German Shepherd will be born into a litter of regular sized G/S. This is NOT a breed it is merely a medical condition. And these poor little dogs have extensive medical problems, such as major skin problems, repertory problems, liver, kidney and some of them can even still develop hip dysplasia, despite their small size. And unfortunately they don't seem to live very long. The average live span for one of these dwarf G/S is about two years - although some have live longer. But even the one who have lived longer, spend their lives in and out of the vet clinic. So again, it's not an actual breed - just a very unfortunate medical condition.

I hope that answered you question.

Absolutely.  I adopted a puppy with all classic characteristics in shape, markings, and exceptionally intelligent behavior in 2002. Full grown now, she wieghs twenty pounds.  Her appearance leaves no question of her breed.  Photo requests to (bobbyn69@gmail.com).
