there  are products you can buy to spread on your carpet to get rid of them.  fleas aren't specific to dogs and cats, there are varieties of fleas for every mammal including yourself.  they grab on to your pant leg when you walk through grass and come into your home with you.

Sprinkle bug dust(like u use in a garden) all over your carpet like carpet fresh, let it sit for at least 15-30 minutes, works like a charm!

You know, I have the same problem! No pets, but every morning I wake up with more bites. I've read that you should vacuum like, all the time. You should also try those bug bombs. You have to stay out of the house for about eight hours, but they usually work really well.

Usually if you have left your house unoccupied and shut up for a few days, this seems to bring carpet fleas out of dormancy.
It has happened to me and I had to flea-bomb the place. Just ask for it @ your local hardware store.

You can use course sea salt which you should be able to buy at the supermarket, sprinkle liberally over carpets and upholstery and leave for the day, vacuum when you get home and they should be gone.
