I have swelling in lymph nodes on the left side of my neck, the doctor has referred to as peritonitis.  Anyone familiar with it?  He said it was rare and put me on a very strong antibodic but I am concerned since it usually relates to the stomach around the appendix for this type of inflamation.   have never heard of anyone getting it due to a flu bug in the neck like this.

I have encountered this before. It is inflammation of the glands in the mouth cave (between the ear and the jaw). These are the glands that water ones mouth at sight of some delicious foods.

The capillaries in these glands get choked up by calcium or other components in blood. Ultrasonic waves have been used successfully to smash those choking particals (almost similarly as the chokings in the kidney are removed by the help of ultrasonic waves) so they can move out with the juice coming out of those glands.

Be very carefull with antibiotics, even if your doctor prescribes them.

The problem with ridding the calcium deposits is that it doesn't change the cause of their deposition.  Some of your tissues are too acidic.  In fact, the accumulation of calcium in any tissues is a major indication that you are calcium deficient (or are not able to use available calcium).  Increase your vitamin D (~4000 I.U.s per day), potassium citrate, essential fatty acids (minerals need fatty acids) Calcium & Magnesium as citrate or coral calcium in the sachets only, chromium nicotinate (improves insulin function)and essential fatty acids. These will promote an antiinflammatory effect. Stay away from refined carbs and fats.

I have swollen lymph nodes in my neck also, but i don't know why. The doctor did a white blood cell count on me and it was normal, meaning there was no infection present in my body at the time. So I'm back to square one. I scared that it might be cancer, part of me doesn't want to know.

A few days before I went to the hair salon, I had a swollen gland on the left side under my jaw. In the evening that I went to the hair salon to get a color, just about an hour or so before, I was not feeling very well. I felt like I was coming down with a cold, sore throat slightly, but the swollen gland pain subsided, and the gland went down in size and firmness. The hairdresser put the color on and no problem there. About 10 minutes or so later, I noticed on the left side of my neck, a small soft bump. I was afraid I was allergic to the color. However, the bump, though odd shaped, actually went away after about half an hour. Can anyone help me understand this at all? Do lymph nodes actually move slowly downward and then shrink? Thank you....

i found out some information on this and it could be due to several things. one thing i found very useful:

cancerous lymph node bumps do not change size very quickly

non-cancerous lymph node bumps change sizes within a few days (which is what mine are doing)

i am still wondering what exactly it is and am planning on going to the doctor very soon.

I have a bump on the left side of my neck, and my neck and shoulders hurt alot, I had a pretty bad sinus infection and I just got done taking my antibiotics, this bump will go away, then come back.  I asked my dad, and he said that he has gotten them before, he said because your neck and shoulders are sore, the muscles in your neck can do that.  I hope it isn't cancer, I am only  20 years old, and I have two kids so I don't want it to be cancer.  I just went to the doctors and he felt my neck and everything, and he didn't say anything about anything.  Just that I had a sinus infection.  Is anyone else in this situation?  Oh and my lymph nodes were also really enlarged, but mine was from mono.   Mine enlarge, and then go away lol ...

I have developed a large nodule (about 1.5 cm) behind my right ear. A day after that developed, another one developed a little lower on my neck. I have been started on Levaquin 500mg daily for 7 days. If this doesn't work, the doctor will take a catscan. From all of the info that I have found, cancer is very rare in the cases of swollen lymph nodes. I would suggest seeing an ENT if your primary physician can't help you.

I am 20 years old. When i was 14 i discovered a swelling on the left side of my neck just under  and around my ear. I was referred by my GP to ear, nose and throat consultant who at first took a small sample using a syringe which did not show anything much, this was followed by several biopsy's and in time larger operations. Of which nothing definite was showing up. I then had bone marrow an ct scan of which nothing clear showed to give a definite diagnosis. As a child I had always suffered from throat infections and always had enlarged tonsil's. The last operation I had was the removal of my tonsil's followed by removal  of my wisdom teeth since having this the lump has decreased in size a considerable amount and not as noticeable if even anymore, but can still be felt along with smaller (tiny) little lumps further down on my neck.
However on the left side of my neck I had always had a tiny little lump beside my ear (sort of on my face) which over the past 8 months continues to grow in size! Having just been with my consultant yesterday who has taken a sample and has booked me in for another ct scan to see what the problem is??
Which I am almost certain the answer will not be found!!!
Has anyone heard of this sort of thing before, give me a little insight???
Could it risk my own health having a second ct scan??

I have had a lump under my chin for a few months now. I have occasional ringing and popping in the ears. I have seen two ENTs and my regular doctor. None of them have found anything unusual. The weird part is now my husband has a lump on the right side of his neck. I am just not sure if this is something I need to be concerned about or not. I am afraid if I accept what the doctors have said I will find out later they were wrong and regret it. If anyone out there has any information it will be appreciated. Thank you.

I have a lump too on my neck.  I went to the doctor and she did a needle bioposy to check for cancer.  It was fine so she thought it was inflamation and gave me 2 wks on antibioctics.  It didn't solve the problem, so she said i could wait and keep an eye on it or remove it.  My lump is movable and sometimes changes in size which is good.  I can't believe so many people on this site haven't gone to the doctors. Please go.  They give you a small needle to extract some sample fluids to have it checked for malignant cells.  Usually it's OK and then that worry is gone from your head.  Do yourself a favor and go to an ear, eye, and throat doctor.

Maybe I have a good product for you. I produce it here in Italy and I still havent comercialized it abroad.
Its a "mat" you put inside the microwave for 4/5 minutes and then you put it around the neck for all the time you want.
Inside the mat there are products that help neck problems and also makes you relax after a bad day.
I am selling a lot of these products here in Italy, maybe you should try.
It is only sold in Pharmacies so you can believe me when I say it worth it.

I am 19and  have had a couple of swollen lymph nodes in my neck, under my jaw, ever since I had mono 4 years ago. They swell when I have an infection and go down, but never fully go away, when I am on an antibiotic.  My doctor has felt them many times but never seems alarmed by them, but I am concerned because they have been like this for so long and was wondering if it could actually be something more serious seeing that I have no other symptoms of anything else that I know of.

Hi, my symptoms started with a saw throat, fever, and swelling in the area of my thryroid glands on one side, my right side, it is not very big you can only feel it but it hurts, a couple of weeks later, when I was feeling tired all the time I noticed a swollen lymph node on the front of my neck, it is pretty small, but it hurts also, and then I started getting breathing problems, and pain as though it is in my ribs.  Now considering I had been going to the doctors for 3 months, and I had one blood test which was clear, they tested for everything, Thryoid problems, blood disorders, viral and bacterial infections and they found nothing, the doctor that I was seeing at the time was alarmed by this and reffered me to ENT for an examination of my larynx.  They found nothing and concluded that the sore throat that was killing me was caused by acid reflux.  I now have to take 30mg of ZOTON (LANSOPRAZOLE).  Afte a couple of days of taking it some of the discomfort had gone, but to this day I still have swollen lymph nodes, one in my neck with a swollen what appears to be thyroid lobe on my right side and also above my ear on my right side a swollen lymph node all of which still hurt when touched and ach. I have also been experiencing Chest pains, fatigue, aches and pains all over my body, what looks like cuts under the skin, sometimes even difficulty breathing, and pains under my arms all of which still continues.  My doctor has tried to put it down to stress, as I lost my son last year and PVS (Post Viral symptoms, can anybody help shed some light on what is happening to me. If you can please email me: stephenycareden1@hotmail.com

I too had a lump that wasn't going away on the left side of my neck at the base if my hairline.  I saw the doctor and he agreed that it was the lymph node so he put me on prednisone and an antibiotic even though i had no visible signs of infection...glad to say it is now after a week and a half almost gone.  Still plan on getting a second opinion and watching to see if it comes back..it was about the size of my thumb from the knuckle to the top of my thumb...good luck and keep me posted!

I've had several (almost 10) swollen lymph nodes on both sides of my neck for almost 10 yrs now. They are hard (almost like cartilage) and do not hurt at all when I press them. However, one of them deep inside my neck seems to rub and mildly hurt the inside muscles/nerves of my neck when I move my neck in a certain (weird) manner.

I do not have any pain during ordinary neck movements, but when I'm alone, I tend to move my neck in that weird manner, even though it slightly hurts every time I do that. It has almost become a habit that I cannot avoid. Does anybody else have the similar problem?

I've had two checks done already and the doctor says the glands are swollen, but its nothing serious. But the weird habit sometimes drives me crazy. I wish I could put a stop to it somehow.

My son got a lump on his neck 5 months ago, just under his jaw. The family doctor initially said it was a swollen lymph node, "don't worry about it". Recently it got much larger, over a 48 hour period. After unsuccessful treatment with antibiotics, a visit to a surgeon for a biopsy has revealed it to be a "pocket of inflammation". According to them, the longevity of the inflammation has caused bone loss in the jaw. The treatment plan will be surgery to remove three teeth, the inflamed tissue, followed by bone grafts from his hip to rebuild deteriorated jaw bone.

I have a swollen lymph gland on the left..under my jaw. But then again my right one has no affliction. Thought I was coming down with a cold, but it's too odd for it to hurt in only one.
People have gotten me worried by researching on the internet and making assumptions, like mono, and other diseases.  Both are red, but the left is more inflamed. Anyone??

Becarefull with prescriptions from docs or out of hours clins/hospitals.  I found them to  pro-long the whole aching & soreness of the neck.

I noticed about a week ago that I had a sore neck, not the front lymph nodes, but I guess ones back behind my ears.. I didn't think much of it, assumed it was just from work because I'm very active. I reached back to try and slightly massage it to ease the tension and found a lump. a day later a similar lump appears directly on the back of my head. this lump seems different though.. almost as if its all over the place instead of just a normal circle type. well, tonight I reached back to see if the swelling had gone down at all and found yet another lump! this is the third lump all on the right side! please help me, I'm extremely paranoid and am going to have it checked out as soon as I am able to..

Thanks

Anyone that has a lump in their neck needs to get it checked. I discovered a lump just above my collar bone, my doc said it was a swollen lymph node and that i needed to go get it checked.  Although your lymph nodes swell when you are fighting infection if they are present for more than 2 weeks than you need to get them checked.  I went for blood texts on Monday and am waiting to see what is causing the lumps.  I also found another 2 lumps on the other side of my neck.  I fear the worst but hope for the best but regardless of the fear of knowing surely the unknown is worse???  GET THEM CHECKED !!!!

I have a lump at the base of my hairline at the back of my neck on the right hand side.
I went to the Doctor this week and he told me that I have a swollen lymph gland and asked me if I had had any infections and my reply was no!!
He asked me to return in three weeks time but did not explain for what??
The gland causes me some pain but it is not constant. It aches more than hurts but it causes my right eye to hurt which in turn is giving me headaches.
Do you have any ideas??

Swollen lymph nodes are common as we can see by the number of posts here. Almost anything can cause this and most of them go away in a week. Infected teeth or mouth sores or infected ear canals can cause swollen glands. If the situation gets worse like some have described, don't be afraid, don't procrastinate and go see a doctor and get an answer. Don't know what kind a doctor some of you have that will feel the lump and not explain his diagnosis or have  you take additional tests. I had such a problem years ago and had my teeth extracted and it went away.

when in doubt, just go to the doctor! it can save your life! I have a swollen lymph node and I'm going to the doctor tomorrow. I'd rather go, get diagnosed and cured, than have the condition worsen and become dangerous. why keep it a mystery and be worried/in denial? it's better to be safe than sorry. even if you're in a tight financial situation, or don't have insurance--get treated. don't take any chances.  health is more important than money.

I read, if you're lymph glands are swollen due to cancer are some other serious disease like that (not infection), the swelling will happen very gradually and not hurt. Otherwise an infection is most likely. Also, muscle pain can be caused by an infection (like the flu). One tip: don't touch the glands (it will make them feel worse). If the swelling doesn't go away, go to a different doctor.

I felt a swollen neck under my ear where you put the earing straight to the below neck. Was a bit swollen and was feeling a bit strange. It was hard to go straight to doctor (which i never had a chance to go to) but my own safe demand was: Voltaren cream. The swollen-ness went down but i feel funny ear and my jaw feels as if i was punched once or twice but hey, joking is good to keep smiling.

I cannot be bothered going to the doctor, as it is a bit way to find him.. so i called him and I was on the Neorophen tablets 1 tablet every 4 hours. Everything felt great.... till...
.... yesterday evening after my gym I came back and had a hand full of almonds. Wooops, suddenly the area was swollen again. I can't understand what the problem is. Shall i still take Voltaren cream? Neorophen tablets?

Anyone out there to answer all this?

I've had swollen glands in my neck for about three weeks now. They have just gotten bigger and more painful. The interesting thing is that they are only enlarged on the left side of my neck. I don't know what it could be from. I didn't have any cold symptoms before this occurred. I am always tired but always hungry, so i doubt it is mono. Can someone give advice?

I have an occassionally re-occuring sort lymph node every year or two. It's always on the left side of the back of my neck in the same spot. The area is tender and feels slightly swollen.

A doctor looked at it and 'blew it off'; it does go away after some number of several days.

I don't know why it happens, I have no known infections. The web sites mention gingivites as one possible cause; I do have gums which are somewhat in imperfect health, bleed when brushing teeth, but I'm unsure about correlating that to the back left neck only.

The web site linked above lists typical doctor questions including whether both sides are affected (no) and whether it's painful or tender (yes), but no info on how to apply that info to the cause.

I came down with an awful "flu" infection.. I felt weak all day, like I was about to pass out, and had tingles in my neck and shoulders. I later that day noticed the lump behind my left ear.. It would hurt for a little then the pain would stop, I ran a fever of 104 F. I took alot of medicine for flu like symptoms, and eventually, my fever dropped by the next day and I felt okay. Now, every while I'll start getting this pain in the glands, i can still feel a bump, and sometimes it becomes very painful with an aching feeling.. its driving me nuts!

I have had a swollen lymph node on the top right side of my neck for almost 3 years now. has remained the same size, and i can move it around. I think hard lumps are the ones that are cancerous, but i am not positive. I do know there are lots of reasons for swollen lymph nodes. Mine is accompanied by what seems to be an adams apple. I just recently noticed a couple of patches of missing hair on my head about the size of a quarter, and my hair is constantly falling out. swollen lymph nodes can be caused by a bacteria or viral infection in your body that your body is having trouble fighting against. If u have bad teeth or gums that can also cause it, by draining into ur neck. autoimmune disease causes it. and hypothyroidism can also cause it. I believe that is when your thyroid gland is not producing sufficient amount of hormone or something.

Hi -

I have a lump on the right side of my neck and it's scaring me like crazy!  My upper back is achy and my right side of my neck is sore too.  I went to the doctor and he told me if it did not go away in three weeks to call him and I would get a blood count done for infection.  He was unalarmed.  My nose, throat and ears are clear, he said but my inner ear is kind of itchy...I hope it is just allergies or something.  I'm very alarmed!  Now I'm feeling for lumps everywhere!  And my husband thinks I'm freaking out.  Which, I guess I am!  :o(

Any insight would be appreciated!

i had a node removed in my neck approx. 5 years ago.  it grew gradually, and was not painful.  i  had it checked after it remained for 2 months without subsiding.  the results of the biopsies were inconclusive.  noone has had an answer for me.  i made a doctor appt for tomorrow, coincidentally, i have 2 more on the left side of my neck.  one is the size of a golf ball, the other the size of a marble.  i have never had one on the right side, the surgeon said when they swell asymetrical, it is not normal.  they are supposed to swell both sides, the same.  my first set of tests, said that toxoplasmosis , the parasite found in cat litter, was found in my tests.  there is a rare disease that involves this parasite, but they werent able to tell me anything.  the first one was scary, these new ones are very scary.  i hope i was able to shed some light on someone elses questions, sorry i couldnt do more.

I have a swollen lymph node in the right side of my neck that has been present for 3 years and has no pain, and i also have an enlarged throat with like an adams apple at the top and another lump further downward. I have been to quiet a few doctors, but all they have done is ask my symptoms, prescribe me antibiotics and send me home. I did request a test for hypothyroidism from one doctor which came back negative. A few months back i noticed 2 patches of hair broke off at the roots, which the doctor prescribed me some cream for burning and itching for. It did not itch at the time, but has been alot lately and is not growing back. The doctor did tell me that if lymph nodes are swollen long enough that they may never go down if they are scarred. He also said that as i have bad teeth that fluids could be draining into my throat from my mouth making my throat and lymph nodes swell. So if anyone has an infection in their mouth or ears then that could be a possible problem for them along with alot of other infections like auto immune disease, cancer, etc......

I have a swollen lymph node on the right side of my neck, I was scared and thought it was cancer. I did ultra-sound and several Xrays and blood tests, everything was normal. Then the doctor decided to do a TB test. It was positive. the swollen gland was a sign that a TB germ has been reactivated in my body and the gland was giving alarm signals. I am now taking a six month treatement, I started ten days ago and the bump is still there.

This isn't an answer, it is a question as I have many of the symptoms above. However, I also have Diabetes, Crohn'sdisease and some valvular damage to my heart, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. All that said: I have the painful left jaw, left lymphatics, (lumpy too)it encompasses my head, (migraines), every part of my neck, front sides and back, shoulders so painful, hubby often touches me there and I scream in pain. I do have an upper left molar that may have an abscess, but I don't know for sure YET. However, I have been having this upper body pain crap for a long time before the tooth prob. Does ANYONE KNOW what we can do to STOP it????
Someone up there said it was Peritonitis but that couldn't be true, as Peritonitis is very serious and needs hospitalization immediately if not sooner.  Thanks for listening.

there's another really good website I just looked at like 10mins ago about my problem!
http://www.entcolumbia.org/hnmass.htm

I had an ear ache on the 23rd, and it went away on the 24th. But then on the 25th, I woke up with a big neck ache, and on the 26th, I had a bump (no bigger than a mosquito bite) behind my ear! Now, starting today (the 28th) the other side of my neck is now is lots of pain and the left side with the bump is in pain too! It feels almost bruised! I've also been getting headaches right behind my eyes and in my forehead! I'm scared and I'm really hoping it's not cancerous!

I have a slight pain in the LH side of my neck and it hurts when i turn my head to the right and swallow. My lymph nodes are not swollen. I am not going to trip about cancer and any other serious disease until it is diagnosed as such.

Reading things on the internet can give you a complex all in itself. Your lymph nodes swell as a DEFENSE against infection. It is usually dues to a virus or some sort of bacterial infection. THIS IS NORMAL! If it didn't happen, I would be concerned, as I am a bit.

These days there are soo many different virii and they all effect people differently, depending on your tolerance and white blood cell count. Go to Walmart or the supermarket and touch the cart handle that a small infected child sneezed on ... then rub your nose. WALLA! your sick.

Stay healthy, exercise and eat the right foods. You will live longer and be sick less.

Hi: Want to answer all who have gland swellings on, in, and around head, neck, shoulders.  You all may have different causes or the same. I have continuous swelling in the lymph glands from lymphedema which simply means an inefficient lymph system. However, each should be examined. Doctors aren't up-to-date on lymph system and therefore, all their answers may have to do with colds etc but mostly it has to do with plugging the lymph glands with bacteria.  I'm trying to locate someone who will help with a diet for people having this problem because in the many years I have had this problem I know that preservatives in food are really bad for the lymph glands around the neck. Also, the lymph system in your body collects bacteria from the body and dumps it into the drainage area which is at the neck. It especially affects the left side because the glands on your left side clean up from the whole body except right arm and right area down to about the waist.  Does that help anyone?  Helen

Cat scratch fever, a tooth that has a bad nerve and needs a root canal or a sinus infection or any infection will useually cause swelling of the lymph nodes. If the first type of antibiotic does not clear the infection try a different antibiotic. Always take Acidopholus when taking antibiotics as they kill the good and bad bacteria. Sometimes the lymph node needs to be drained or removed if it does not go down soon after the infection is cleared.

I have two somewhat soft bumps on the right side of my neck, and a third one diagonally below and behind my right ear.  They aren't very sore to touch, and don't hurt when they are not being touched.  I haven't been sick, nor do I have any symptoms of sickness or infection.  I do have another bump on the back of my skull which is very, very painful and feels hard.  It showed up practically overnight about two weeks ago, and the three bumps on my neck/behind my ear showed up last night.  (The one behind my ear showed up after the two on my neck.) I was wondering if anyone could give me any informations about this.  Does anyone know if the bumps on my neck/behind my ear might possibly related to that on lower portion of the back of my head, and if the ones on my neck really are inflamed lymph glands?  I thought they were, but they remind me a lot of mumps (but I know they aren't) and like I said, I haven't and don't currently feel ill.  Please e-mail me: QuebradaVida2006@hotmail.com

I also have a lump on the left side of my neck.  I noticed this after I had a bad "Crick" in the neck which lasted about 3.5 weeks. The lump went down but never disappeared.  I hurt my neck again about 1 month later...and the lump began to swell.  I went to the doctor and he told me that it was a lymph node...possibly from infection or lymphoma.  He placed me on antibiotics for 10 days...I am 8 days into them and lump is still there...however my neck muscles are very achy on both sides of my neck and around swollen lymph node.  I will go back to the doctor in about 1.5 weeks (switching insurance policies)to see if they can tell me something or do a biopsy.
