I like to store lumber 2x4 etal  upright along the wall.  we built a unit that allows us to see our inventory immediately since it ranges from 12 ft+ down to 4ft.  Sheet wood is stored on edge and we built a rolling storage bin this is sectioned off so we can separate  types of material as well as sizes.
