Last night my dog (Sheltie/Collie mix)started shaking (kind of like when you are really really cold) and she just seemed really scared. She hid in the closet and then under my desk.  This went on for about 3 hours, then she seemed ok.  This morning she followed me around more than usual.  What is going on with her?

There are several thing that may have happened.  The most obvious is that she was startled by something.  Is she normally scared of people?  If so, check your house for missing things or signs of Breaking and entering.  If not, (to be on the safe side) I would bring her to the vet and check her for neurological malfunctions.

The most likely thing that happened to you dog was that something simply scared it.  The typical response to fear for dogs is shaking, hiding in closets or enclosed areas, pacing, running away and even destroying things.  As to the remarks about seizure, no dog or any person for that matter would have a 3 hour seizure, so it seems we've found the idiots on this page.

hi, last night my golden retriever also just started shaking, foaming/slobbering profusely, and whining. my dog is usually very active and EXTREMELY well mannered/very nice and used to people, and other animals. could this be a slight case of electrocution; from a electric fence? did he maybe get overheated/tired from a long "Romp" around the neighborhood? what do you think?

What area of the country are you in? I have had dogs exibit similar behaviors before and after earthquakes. If you remember when it happened you can check the records for a quake near you. I was amazed to feel two earthquakes in Oklahoma last year. It can happen anywhere.

My dog shakes violently and slobbers really bad every night at the same time (around the time it gets dark).  He won't calm down until someone takes him outside.  Once outside, he will only go in one part of the yard or else he shakes again.  What in the world could this be?  He is getting worse everyday and the vet says his health is good.  Any ideas?  He is a mix breed pointer.

Sometimes when my dog eats something she's not supposed to, she acts like that. she shivers, sleeps a lot, and sometimes slobbers and throws up. She especially likes to get in the trash, so it happens a lot! I resently got a trash can that goes under my cupboard, so it doesn't happen anymore.

i don't know what kind of dog it is, because i'mhouse sitting, but the smaller and younger of the two dogs has the shakes bad. like, i hold him or touch him and my whole body shakes. he refused a biscuit. his eyes are open really wide and his mouth is open and the tongue is curled unusually, he's panting loudly. there is a storm going on. he had to get valium i guess during july 4th because the noise freaked him out. do you think this is the same thing?

I have a Wheaton Terrier that has been having a seizure every day for 3 months.  These always last from 1.5 to 3.5 HOURS.  So YES - they do have 3 hour seizures!  She has been to a neurologist and is on Phenobarbital (3 weeks) - to no avail as yet.  We have high hopes but no one seems to know what is causing it.  The seizures are very taxing to her (and us).  She lays on her side completely flexed and shaking, with her back hunched and panting heavily.   She also whimpers and thrashes when she can.  It just started and we hate to put her down.  Has anyone ever encountered this?

This morning upon return his usual morning walk, while he was resting all of a sudden my 9 year old bullmastiff started shaking. Just shaking nothing else as if he was really cold.I gave him a massage to relax his muscles for about five minutes and covered him to keep warm.He was alert but looked somewhat disheartened . Otherwise he is  a healty, happy, good mannered dog, never misses his daily exercise. We have never experienced such a thing before. After some rest he became his usualself again. Thanks for helpful comments.

Have any of the owners of the scared dogs found causes?  I live in VA and adopted my dog about 6 months ago.  She's extremely well behaved, but two months after I adopted her she stared up in the middle of a walk and nearly took off like a bat.  She started shaking with fear and tucked her tail under her legs for nearly two days, hiding in the only dark corner my apartment has.  She was completely fine on the third day, and I thought that was it.  However, it's now happened twice, and I would really like to know why in case I can prevent it.  No seismic activity, and all three times there were no storms anywhere nearby.  But every time she definitely looks high up on the walls or towards the sky.

My dog recently had a spazm, she just was lying on my bed and and just all of a sudden started shaking quite violently I picked her up and she  just gripped on and did not move at all, after that I sat her down on a bed and her eyes opened so wide that I could see straight into them. This has never happened before also she snapped out of it when I offered a treat. Could it have been something like a tick because she hasn't had anything like that (Tick, heartworm etc for ages.

dogs and other animals can exhibit signs of panic during thunderstorms. they may tremble, whine, drool or yawn and seem very clingy to their family. calm them with soft voice and physical contact. they are merely scared of unusual stimuli. don't make it worse by scolding them. good luck and be in control while being decent.

My dog has hip problems and last night she just started falling over and then shakes for just a few seconds.  She went to the vet two days ago and got a steroid shot and now she will walk around for a while and then she will sit down or lay down for awhile but when she gets up she just falls over then shakes.  Then she gets up and walks around fine.  Anyone know what is wrong??  I'm taking her to the vet in the morning just wondering if anyone has heard of this before??

               some forms of poisoning can
               cause uncontrolable shaking
             3 somtimes after strenuous
                exersise my dog will shake
                a little the next day

Your dog probally had a seizure, it's fairly common in Golden Retrievers.  You should call your vet and tell her/him.  If that happens again, don't try lifting him/her, just move everything thats around him/her.

Well, my dog (a shih tzu) started shaking last night.  He shakes mostly when he is laying down and when he breathes in, it is the sort of shaking you do when you are gasping for air.  Also, when he walks he turns around and looks at his butt, like it is something that is bothering him back there.  Does anyone know what this could be?

hello i have a small dog called buster, he is a cross between a bichion frise and a silkey. I am a person in a wheelchair, i find it very difficult at times to maintain his coat this is due to his figgeting and getting upset with me brushing him...so i opted to have his coat shawn...well this was yesterday. He seem to be shaking a lot now and running around like a rabbit and wimpers a little from time to time...Is it because he has been frightened from his first experence with the clippers and also could he be cold??it worries me and i feel guilty now that i have put him through it. He has fir not hair so it was getting matted at times although i would snip the clups off as soon as they appear. will he settle down or should i take him to the vet. cheers and thanks

Hi, i have a rescued border collie. She used to come in my room in the mornings and wake me up and she used to love to be around me. I havent been around that much the past 2 weeks, but when i am i shower her w/ love. but now she never comes to wake me up, only when my mom makes her go in my room, then she just jumps on my bed sees im there, then lies at the door waiting to leave instead of cuddling up nxt to me. shes really close w/ my mom now, but ive been home the past 2 days and when i first come in the door shes happy, but then she starts growling when i pet/come near her and runs away w/ her tail btwn. her legs! i was home alone w/ her and she seemed to miss my mom alot and she ran away from me and hid in her crate curled up for an hour, then sat by the front door and then looking out the window,i tried to comfort her but she snapped@me and later she was shaking and CRYING!! shes nice when i give her walks, and i never have hit or shouted at her. peope say it may be a scent, but i think if it was, she would always be scared of me even when i first walk in the door. do you know wut it is? i miss my dog!
