It is a 3 day diet where you eat a hot dog for dinner every night and have a cup of vanilla ice cream every night.  I am not sur eof the specifics but would also liek an additinal copy of the diet.

This diet must be followed EXACTLY. You should loose 3-5 lbs the first 10 days.

FIRST DAY

Breakfast:
Black Coffee or Tea
1/2 Grapefruit
1 slice toast
2 tbs. peanut butter

Lunch:
1/2 cup of tuna (no mayo)
1 slice toast
Cofee or Tea

Dinner:
2 slices of any meat
1 cup of string beans
1 cup of beets
1 apple
1 cup of vanilla ice cream
---------------------------

SECOND DAY

Breakfast:
1 egg
1/2 banana
1 slice of toast
Black Coffee or Tea

Lunch:
1 cup cottage cheese
5 saltines

Dinner:
2 hotdogs
1 cup broccoli
1/2 cup of carrots
1/2 banana (the other half from breakfast)
1/2 cup vanilla ice cream
------------------------------------------

THIRD DAY

Breakfast:
5 saltines
1 slice cheddar cheese
1 apple
Black Coffee or Tea

Lunch:
1 hard boiled egg
1 slice toast

Dinner:
1 cup of tuna
1 cup beets
1 cup cauliflower
1/2 cantaloupe
1/2 cup vanilla ice cream
-------------------------

In 3 days you will loose 3 lbs. (most do)
After 3 days of dieting you can eat normal food, but don't overdo it. After 4 days of normal eating start back on your 3 day diet. You can loose up to 30 lbs in 40 days - if you stick with it. Worked for alot of people I know GOOD LUCK!!!

You are all misinformed.  The diet is called "hot dogs, eggs, eggs".....the first day...7 hot dogs, no bun, mustard only, 2nd day eggs any style, and the third day eggs any style...lose between 8-10 lbs

The true name of this diet is called the CLEVELAND CLINIC DIET.  It came out many years ago.  Everyone else has incorporated it.  Yes, it really does work.
edwardnortonfan is correct.
Stick with it and you can't go wrong. :-)

This diet does work.  I have done it in the past and lost 6 pounds in 3 days.  I just started it today.  I am really wondering why you can only follow it for 3 days.  What exactly happens to cause malnutrition if you do it continuously?  It covers ALL the food groups...can someone please help me understand?  And while we're at it, does anyone know HOW the diet works in the first place?

Re: HotDog diet/3 day diet
Does anyone know if the hotdogs must be a low fat or just regular like weiners, polish or even some smoked flavor, the calories and fat can be really different and there is a lot of sodium, any suggestioins?  Also drinking tea or coffee, anyone know if Chinese or Japanese green tea is fine since it has no flavor and is just like water, but has antioxidant properties.
Tks for your comments!

I'm on the diet right now.
The first time I tried it was almost 30 years ago. I've lost 8 lbs in 3 days. the way I was told is this :
day 1  9 bananas
day 2  9 eggs
day 3  9 all beef hotdogs
day 4  3 of each of the above ( 1 banana, 1 egg and one hotdog for your three meals.

I feel great, but I must admit I was only able to choke down 7 bananas the first day
Hope this helps.

I have done this diet (3-day printed above) with the and successfully lost weight. I have substituted chicken for tuna and it still worked albeit not as well. In answer to Elsbeth, this works on a chemical breakdown as well as reduced calories so you can not cheat at all. I spent months trying out different substitutions, etc to find some that actually work. I have done things like have the same lunch every day but using only the combinations listed above. The combinations are very important also. Yes, you can drink water and I have used different teas as long as there is no sugar, etc. in it. If anyone has any other proven substitutions, please share. Thanks.

Chester is right on, that is the "Banana Egg Hot Dog" diet that will, in 4 days, shed 10-14 pounds.  You should drink water, and lots of it, throughout those 4 days.

You may put a tiny bit of mustard on the hotdogs and a dash of salt and pepper on the eggs, but nothing else.  Use regular hotdogs not the reduced fat kind or anything.  No coffee, no milk, no nothing else.

Everyone in my family does this diet and it is always no-fail.  I am trying it for my first day, for the first time!  I will let you know how it turns out.

I have used the clevland clinic 3 day diet a number of times.  I usually only do it once and that gets me started on being more careful.  I don't lose but a few pounds and it is encouraging to get started losing right away.  I do have a bit of a hard time getting dry tuna down.

This diet is really great! However, I found this diet in a bottle of diet pills
(Tri-lite). Does that mean that I didn't even need the pills to begin with? What a rip-off!

Anyway...drink 8 glasses of water a day for better results (thats why the diet calls for black coffee of tea).

Im wondering if I should still take my diet pills or can I take a >>>multi-vitamin<<<? Someone please let me know!!!!!

hi! i'm doing the 3 day diet right now (today's my first day).  i did this a few times before and it worked, although i didn't lose 10 pounds (i wasn't really aiming to, just wanted to lose about 6-7 lbs., which i did).  i don't know if the 3 day diet, 4 day normal eating, then back to 3 day diet is effective though.  i did the diet 2x in one month before and only lost 3-4 lbs the second time.  you have to be religious about following the diet as specified, so no substitutions or in-between snacking.  hope this helps!

I thought I had already posted this message but I don't see it here so forgive me if I am repeating myself. I am on round two (the last day of the second time I've done the 3-day diet)and have lost 12 lbs so far! (Without pills, acidburn!) I knew someone else who bought those pills and on the back of the diet was a list of substitution foods for the diet. The diet doesn't work as fast with them but it still works. Could you share the substitutions with us, please? I would be so grateful. I am still "enjoying" the diet but I know I'm bound to get bored with it eventually.

actually you are all sorta wrong! The hot dog diet is hot dogs-day one; eggs-day two; bananas- day three; and oranges-day four; the quantity is 7 of each on some of the lists and 9 of each on others. The diet everyone else is referring to is the 3-Day Metabolism diet...and yes it does work.  But you gotta work on eating habits to keep the weight off and that is a lifetime diet, not a weight loss diet. bon appetite. And congrats to losing whatever weight you do lose:)

To add some input on the 3-day diet, from what i understand, this diet is from the Cardiac Unit of Birmingham Alabama Hospital.  The diet is based on a Chemical breakdown and it works.  It is given to patients who need to loose lots of weight fast before having heart surgery you could loose up to 40lbs in one month.  You may not substitute any of the foods and Salt and Pepper may be used to season your food, no other spices.

The menu I have is as follows:

DAY 1

Breakfast:
================
Black Coffee Or Tea
1/2 Grapefruit or 1/2 c Grapefruit juice
1 slice Toast
1TBS Peanut Butter
================
Lunch:
================
1 Baked Chicken Breast(no skin)
Small Green Salad With Lemon Juice
5 Saltine Crackers
===================
Dinner:
==================
30z Any type of Meat(no skin)
1/2 cup Carrots(cooked or raw)
1 Cup Green Beans
1 Small Apple
1/2 Ice Cream

DAY 2:

Breakfast:
================
Black Coffee or Tea
1 Egg (no grease)
1 Slice Toast
1/2 Banana
================
Lunch:
================
1 Cup Cottage Cheese or Tuna
5 Saltine Crackers
==================
Dinner:
==================
2 Wieners(Franks)
1 Cup Broccoli or Cabbage
1/2 Cup Carrots
1/2 Cup Bananas
1/2 Ice Cream

DAY 3

Breakfast:
==============
Black Coffee or Tea
5 Saltine Crackers
1 Slice Cheddar Cheese
1 Small Apple
===============
Lunch:
================
1 Hard Boiled Egg
1 Slice Toast
=================
Dinner:
================
1 Cup Tuna
1 Cup Cauliflower
1 Cup Beets or Carrots
1 Cup Cantaloupe
1/2 Cup Ice Cream

After you have completed the 3-day cycle, for 1 day you can eat your normal food and begin the 3-day process again. I did Loose a good 20-25lbs within 1 month but you could loose up to 40lbs. MY problem was that I got sick of eating the Tuna with nothing in it... but it does work...

I hear a lot you all speaking of the Cleveland Clinic Diet... does anyone have a menu... I Just want to know if it matches the one I already have

I have successfully used this diet to kick start better eating habits a bunch of times - usually I do it to stop a sugar binge. It works.  I always use mayo on my tuna and I always have used grated cheese on my cauliflower BUT I never eat the crackers or the toast or the ice cream! So - don't believe you can't add in a little or take away something you don't eat - it just has to stick to 1000 calories! So COUNT THEM UP!  If you don't like tuna - go ahead and use chix - I have and it still works well - Just make sure you use the right amount - and add up the daily calories!  It's all about the calories NOTHING CHEMICAL!
My roommate and I have typed up our own version and put it on our fridge -because we wanted to substitute and it still works really really well!  1000 calories! I'm 120 lbs pretty much all the time!  If I binge on sugar I just go on for 3 days and I'm back to normal.
We call it the 3 day diet:

Breakfast: 1 egg any style, 1/2 any fruit
Lunch:1 grilled cheese sandwhich or 1 plain cheese sandwhich (like one slice of swiss on rye bread with mustard) or 1 whole can of tuna with mayo and celery and onions (easy to take to work in tupperware)  - NOTHING ELSE til DINNER!!!
Dinner: 2 cups any veggies - any way - butter and sauces all OK!!! 3oz of any meat.
Any fruit for dessert one hour later.

Drink water if you feel thirsty.
Drink no calorie anything with your meals.
Do NOT EAT between Meals!
Do NOT EAT after 7PM!
3 DAYS only so NO CHEATING!
Works best to kick start good eating habits - it was never meant to be something to live off of.

Works EVERY time!  3 days only - and you're off sugar and you can start on a normal 1500 calorie  diet.  WE LOVE IT!

the hot dog diet is where you eat 9 bananas the first day, 9 eggs the next, then 9 hot dogs the next. then on the 4th day, you eat 3 of each- 3 bananas, 3 hot dogs and 3 eggs. but you cant keep going like that. you need to stop and then you can start about a week later.

All these diets sound stupid to me.. The only reason you're going to lose any weight (IF you do lose any) is because you're eating less than 1400 calories a day.  There is no magic formula to these diets.  They're disgusting!  Plain tuna?  9 bananas in ONE day??  Come on now... Let's get real people..

All you guys out there trying to pass off the Cleveland Diet and those other ones are WRONG!!!!!!  The question was about the HOT DOG DIET....  I saw a segment about it on DR. PHILL today.  And the doctor he was talking to explained it.  It's: 9 bananas the first day, 9 eggs the next, then 9 hot dogs the next. then on the 4th day, you eat 3 of each- 3 bananas, 3 hot dogs and 3 eggs. The doctor said it DOES work but did not recomend it.  I say...... Heck, I'm fat and anything is worth a try.  I start tomorrow.

The "hot dog diet" is great.
But, try this..... it WORKS!

1. Do the 3-day diet (the one with tuna)
2. Do Atkins (20g. carbs)for one week
        DO NOT CHEAT
3. Do the banana, egg, hotdog diet (4 days)

At the end of those two weeks you should loose mega pounds. I lost 13 lbs!!!

E-mail me at aadrianiac@aol.com and tell me if this worked for you...This diet takes a lot of will-power, so be strong!

edwardnortonfan  and several others were absolutely right.  Birmingham cardiac diet and hot dog diet two different animals.
Daughter and I are both on Birmingham:  she has lost 19 pounds in 3 weeks; I am older and have lost 10.  Need to follow it religiously, as one person put it.  On 4 days  off, eat what you want, but dont over-do or snack a lot.  You can still lose some weight. We are both feeling much better than usual and have more energy.

After the 4 days of eating the hot dogs, eggs, and bananas, do you take a break like on the other three day diet or do you just start over again after the fourth day?All I heard was Hot Dog Diet at the end of Dr.Phil and I really need to know this because I really want to try this diet.I weigh 211 lbs.Now that's just fat!

Angie and Fat Grannie have the diet the way I got it: 1st day 9 bananas (3 ea. meal) then 9 eggs (3 each meal) made boiled or scrambled with no butter, then 9 beef hotdogs -NOBUN- just some mustard. Last day is 3 eggs for breakfast, 3 bananas for lunch and then 3 hot dogs. My note said drink lots of water. Coffee and Tea are OK all day. Absolutely nothing else. It is supposed to be a chemical thing. I lost 6 lbs. in the 4 days, my husband lost 9 and a male friend lost 17!  I guess it depends on your size and exercise also. I find it a great starter before just cutting down on calories. I never used it more than 4 days at a time. This doesn't sound real healthy though!

We've all tried the Three Day Diet at my house, but we never get all the way through day three.  I tried "The Airforce Diet" many, many years ago, which was a ten day diet that had bacon and eggs for breakfast, meat and salad for lunch, meat salad and veggie for dinner.  There was also a grapefruit in there.  Does anyone have this diet? You were supposed to lose 10 pounds in 10 days.

i am on day one of the three day diet. i hope it works. if you look up www.3-day-diet-plan.com, it tells you that you can use sweet and low, or splenda, other seasonings, lemon, etc.  so the foods don't have to taste so plain. i still don't see how you could be malnourished if you did it more than 3 days.

I am on day 3 of this diet. It lost about 5 lbs. the hard part is I AM ALWAYS STARVING! The lunches are so small that by 3:30 or so I want dinner. Then, bed time I am famished. Another thing I started that supposedly works is taking a calcium pill with vitamin D at breakfast and one at dinner. ??? My friends have done it and they lost just by taking the pills. They say Wal Mart's Spring Valley brand or whatever it's called works best. ?? I Dunno... we'll see.

As a point the cleveland clinic diet and the Hot Dog Diet are two different diets. The Hot Dog Diet is based upon reducing consumption of lumenides in ones diet. Lumenides are an amino acid group found in foods which are subject to prolonged exposure to sunlight. The salts, nitrates and other noxious chemicals in hot dogs actually break down lumenides which why hot dogs and certain brands of bacon are actually beneficial to the diet. Legumes are good, rice, potatoes, carrots, beets, yams, radishes, onions (Not chives or scallions), garlic, shallots . . . anything that grows UNDER GROUND. No leaves, No Fruits, No Flowers. Bacon and hot dogs, Shrimp, Lobsters, Catfish, fluke and flounder. NO EGGS. NO CHICKEN. NO COW. No Milk. No Cheese.

Junk food, or some junk food, is good as well. Hostess cupcakes, twinkies, those big pink macaroons. Oreos. Peanut butter. Rice Krispies Treats.

No wheat. If you want to drink, Sake is fine but no beer, or rum, or whiskey. Vodka is Okay, if it is potato vodka. Wine is a no-no.

Soda, mostly bad. Ginger ale: Good.

Beverages might be tricky, but think a lot of water mostly. Also, Borscht or Beet juice, Ginger ale, Coffee. Avoid tea as it is a leaf and leaves grow by sunlight.

Sounds pretty ridiculous, but I've lost a fair 10 pounds in seven days.

People... Two words... Portion Control... A lot of people here are like, your diet is wrong, or that one is flawed, but the truth is, they almost all will work. But these diets are not the answer to loosing weight and keeping it off. These diets are for nothing more then temporary quick weight-loss.
I am going into Marines soon, and have had to loose a lot of weight to get in. I was 270 pounds, and now I am at 205... I did not get there by eating these diets all the time. I used them for a jump start or when I got discouraged.
The real trick is portion control and the other thing is, a lot of you here should go see a licensed clinical nutritionist. I saw one before starting my first diet, and I found out I should not have more then 1200 calories a day for my diet, I did not stick to her plan, but I did stick to the 1200 calories. If anyone here is serious about loosing weight and keeping it off heres the trick.
Portion control, eat small meals spread throughout the day, drink lots of water, take a multi-vitamin such a mega men ultra from GNC, cutback on the snacky, fatty, and sugary foods, and like it or not, you have to get off your butt and exercise. If you are not ready to do the above, then maybe your not ready to be dieting. It takes commitment and willpower. Don't fall victim to fad diets and diets like the ones above. They are good jump-starters and motivational reminders, but thats it, they are not a diet plan.
I have struggled with weight loss most of my life and have tried it all from south beach, to the pills, the Atkins, to the liquid diets, even the ones above...with all the money I have spent so far, I could have had LIPO suction"humor". I have been dieting only a few months now and have lost 65 pounds and still going. I can't stress how important exercise is to, even if its a light jog, or leg lifts, or a brisk walk everyday or other day. I wish you the best of luck on your diets and what ever you do keep motivated!!!! There is light at the other end of the bulge.

I did the Birmingham Diet and felt great, I only lost 5 lbs the first time, but I didn't gain anything back over the 4 day rest... I am trying the hot dog diet now and am on day 3--I can barely walk, my body is soooooo tired, I feel awful... I don't think I can continue, I guess my body just doesn't have a good reaction to this diet, no wonder people have landed in the hospital due to malnutrition! I feel like I would be there before the 4th day... Glad if the diet works without making some of you sick, but I just cannot continue this one.. Monday I will start over on the 3 day diet... Good Luck, just thought I would give you the heads up, in case you start feeling funny.....

The American Heart Association Diet from the Birmingham, Alabama Cardiac Unit IS BOGUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go to the AHA website. It IS NOT there. I called them and was told "officially" it is a hoax. There is not a Birmingham, Alabama cardiac unit that has a diet like this. I can't beleive all the crap in here. I know that we are all desperate for that "MIRACLE" diet, but it does not exist. Several of you hit on the correct way to lose weight. Eat proportioned, balanced, healthy food and get some exercise. Cut out the sodas, sugar and refined carbs. Drink plenty of water and take a good multi-vitamin and mineral supplement. You'll be in shape before you know it and STAY that way. Instead of spending time on websites like this, go to "official" health websites and learn about what you are eating and what you can do to get healthy. Then get off your duff and go for a brisk walk. NOW! GO! Good luck to all of you. You CAN do it.

None of these diets came from any hospitals. Your paper might say it did, but they didn't. Go to snopes.com or any other urban legend site and they'll fill you in. Better yet, call the hospital and ask them. Between their big sighs, they will tell you they didn't develop these diets.

Many people do need a jumpstart, but please make it a healthy one.  Try weight watchers or South Beach or some plan that has some balance to it, and above all, exercise portion control and exercise your body. You'll lose weight, I promise!

I have done a diet from the American Heart Association (a 3 day diet) for years, it is a great way to get back to good eating habits.  It is almost like the above ones but includes substitutions.

Day1
Breakfast: Black coffee or tea, 1/2 grapefruit, 1 slice of toast, 2 T peanut butter
Lunch: 1/2 cup of tuna, 1 slice of toast, black coffee or tea
Dinner:2 slices of any type meat (3 oz), 1 cup string beans, 1 cup beets, 1 small apple, 1 cup of vanilla ice cream.

Day 2
Breakfast: 1 egg, 1/2 banana, 1 slice of toast, black coffee or tea
Lunch: 1 cup cottage cheese, 5 saltine crackers
Dinner: 2 hot dogs, 1 cup broccoli, 1/2 cup carrots, 1/2 banana, 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream

Day 3
Breakfast: 5 saltine crackers, 1 slice of cheddar cheese, 1 small apple, black coffee or tea
Lunch: 1 hard boiled egg, 1 slice of toast
Dinner: 1 cup of tuna, 1 cup beets, 1 cup cauliflower, 1/2 cantaloupe, 1/2 cup of vanilla ice cream

Substitutions:
1 cup tuna = 1 cup broiled shrimp
1 cup broccoli = 1 cup of sauerkraut or cooked cabbage
1 cup beets = 1 cup green beans or 1 cucumber
1 cup cottage cheese = 1 cup yogurt
1 grapefruit = 1 small can of grapefruit juice

Diet works on a chemical breakdown and is proven,  Do not vary any of the items. Salt and pepper may be used, but no other seasoning. This diet to be used 3 days at a time.  In three days you will loose 10 pounds,  After 3 days of dieting you can eat normal, but don't over do it.  After a day of normal eating start back on your 3 day diet. DO NOT SNACK. You are allowed diet soda or water to drink, coffee or tea with no sugar.  YOU CAN LOOSE 40 POUNDS IN 1 MONTH IF YOU STICK TO IT, GOOD LUCK!

i would, like to point out that this diet doesn't work for everybody. two other people did it with me and one did not lose or gain any weight.

As to the hot dogs part, I heard that it's neccessary to use ONLY all beef hot dogs.

I'll be starting this diet tomorrow, in expectation of my husbands return from Iraq. I've already lost about 25 pounds, but I'd like for my size 7's to be a little loose.

Does anyone know if you can expect to lose even MORE weight if you're doing at least 45 minutes of exercise each day on top of the diet?

Thanks,

Over the past year (since my daughter was born), I've been fairly lazy and my eating habits have slipped.  As a result, I've put on about 25 lbs. that I want to lose.  I'm 34 years old and I don't want to turn into one of those helplessly-out-of-shape middle aged men.  I can't do much about my receding hair line, but I can fix my belly.

I just started this diet yesterday not because I'm am ignorant of the fact that this IS A FAD DIET but because it seems relatively sound, at least as a kick start to a "real" diet and exercise plan.
For one, you're only on the diet for 3 days at a time, then you're eating regularly for 4 days.  This is VERY important.  WHY?  Because when you diet using extreme measures such as what this diet recommends, several things happen.  Most importantly, you shock your body into losing weight fast because it is used to consuming many more calories during an average day.  Your metabolism is [relatively] high at this point.  When your metabolism is high and you restrict your caloric intake, your body reacts by burning whatever it can get it's hands on (like excess body fat, but not only fat) to fill the void, at least for a short time.  Hence, you lose weight.

But you can only trick your metabolism for so long.  After a while (maybe a couple of days), your body figures out that you're not going to feed it what it wants, so it adjusts by slowing down your metabolism.  As a result, your body requires fewer calories and the weight-loss effects of extreme dieting taper off quickly.

Worse yet, if you diet too harshly for too long, your body will kick into "starvation mode" where your metabolism is very low.  Once you start feeding your body again, your body says "hey, I don't know when I'm going to eat again, so I better store some of this food as body fat."  As a result, resuming a normal eating regimen after "starving" yourself can actually cause you to gain body fat faster than if you had simply maintained a reasonable diet over that same period of time.

I'm no expert, but I would guess that this diet probably works because it tricks your body just long enough.  Just when your body begins to think, "hey, I really ought to lower my metabolism," you start eating "normally" again and your metabolism stays up.  That's the theory, at least.

The other thing I like about this diet is that the foods seem to be [relatively] nutritionally balanced (except for maybe the hot dogs and ice cream).  I do have my reservations, though.  For one, this diet wants you to consume most of your calories late in the day or evening, when you're the least active.  Modern thinking is that you should eat more calories at breakfast because (1) you haven't eaten for 8 hours or so, so your body needs the extra calories, and (2) you've got the whole day to burn them off.  The other drawback to this diet is that it isn't real specific about certain things.  For example, does it recommend wheat or white bread?  Fresh or canned veggies?  Does it matter?  Maybe not for the purposes of this diet, but I would lean toward the healthier choices.  I'm sure 2 slices of meat does not mean 2 slices of "SPAM."

One more point I want to make: never underestimate the importance of exercise even if it's just walking every other day.  Exercise (especially exercise that permits you to gain or maintain muscle mass) helps boost your metabolism and can help change your "body shape" if not your "body weight."  I'm sure most of you would agree that a 250 pound man with significant amount of muscle looks better than a 200 pound man that is mostly fat, bone, skin and water.  This goes for women as well.

Back to one thing I said earlier.  When you trick your metabolism into burning more calories than you're taking in, it reacts by burning whatever else it can get its hands on.  Body fat is one source of calories.  Muscle is another.  If you lose weight too quickly for too long you'll wind up losing as much muscle as you do fat.   As a result, you won't look like that model in the magazine you've got taped to your refrigerator.  Instead you'll look like a smaller version of your fatter self.  Exercise can help counteract this effect, but the real answer is don't stick to the fad diets for too long.  If you want to make a lasting impact on your weight (or better yet, your body fat percentage), you're eventually going to have to adopt...I hate to say it, but...a sensible eating plan and some form of exercise regimen.  Use the fads for a quick boost when you need it.

That said, I'll probably stay on this diet for 2 weeks, maybe 3 at most.  I've also started working out again, although I'm going to take it easy for the next few weeks.

Good luck to all of you.  THIS IS YOUR TIME!

I recieved a copy of the "3 day diet" you are all mentioning above about 10 years ago. I never used it because I was suspicious about a diet that raved over fast wieght loss comming from the American Heart Association. Recently, I have regained intrest and researched this diet. If you simply go on the AHA's web site, you will find that this is a phony diet. It was NOT developed by the AHA and they absolutely do not recommend it. Among other names, it is commonly called the American Heart Association Diet,  The Miami Heart Institute Diet, and The Cleveland Clinic Diet. If you must try this diet, please just be advised that you are not dieting under the advise of the AHA. Also, please do not follow this diet for more than 3 days at a time without a 4 day "rest" period. Nutritionist will advise that this diet does not contain adequate nutritional value to maintain health if followed regularly. I do not wish for many a mislead person to wind up hospitalized or dead due to malnutrition.

Here's an alternative to the "Hot Dog Diet".  I can speak on behalf of both diets, they BOTH really do work!  About 5 years ago, I did the so called "Mayo Clinic Diet" that I provided below.  IT WORKED FOR ME!  I only did one session of 12 days and then a 1/2 session.  I also did light cardio 3 times a week.  I looked great, felt great and everyone noticed!  I went from a size 7/8 + to a comfortable 3/4!

As for the "Hot Dog Diet", the exact formula also given above by edwardnortonfan was done by a co worker of mine and WORKED!  She followed it stickily and did it for about a month.  She had immediate results and then began jogging.  She lost almost 50 pounds and toned up.  In less then three months, she was strutting herself in a new wardrobe and still looks great over a year later!  It was the jump start she needed.

As for me, I've had two children since I did the diet I've provided below.  As soon as I'm done nursing my youngest (2 months old) I will try the "Mayo Clinic" version that worked for me a few years ago to lose these lingering 40 pounds.  I need more verity and feel that it's a good alternative & I believe in it because I've done it.  Here is "exactly" what I did...

There is no such thing as the Mayo Clinic DietThe Mayo Clinic has stressed many times that they did not create this fad diet, nor do they recommend it to anyone. The diet is not nutritionally sound. It may result in a quick weight loss, but the weight will be gained back quickly. You can judge how unhealthy this diet is with just a glance! There are several variations of this diet, but they all include grapefruit with each meal. The premise was that grapefruit helped your body burn fat. This theory has been officially debunked.

The "not really" Mayo Clinic Diet:

BREAKFAST: 1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice. 2 Eggs any style 2 Slices of bacon Black coffee or tea, no sugar

LUNCH: 1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice. Salad and or raw veggies (any dressing, {not low fat or fat free}) Meat (Cooked any way)

DINNER: 1/2 grapefruit or 8oz unsweetened juice. Meat (cooked any way) Vegetables (any green or red, may be cooked in butter or Seasoning or a salad as above)Black coffee or tea, no sugar

BEDTIME: (opt) 8oz Tomato juice or skim milk

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. At any meal you may eat until you are full, and you can not eat anymore. You must eat the minimum listed listed at each meal.
2. Do not eliminate anything from the diet, especially don't skip the bacon at breakfast or omit salads. It is the combination of foods that burn the fat.
3. The grapefruit is important because it acts as a catalyst that starts the burning process.
4. Cut down on coffee, it affects the insulin balance that hinders the burning process. Try to limit to one cup each meal. 5. Don't eat between meals, if you eat the combination of food suggested, you will not get hungry.
6. The diet may eliminate sugars and starches. Fat does not form fat, it helps burn it, so you can fry food in butter and use butter generously on vegetables.
7. Do not eat desserts, breads and white vegetables of sweet potatoes. You may double or triple helpings of meat, salads or vegetables. Eat till you are stuffed. The more you eat the more weight you will lose.
8. There may be no weight loss in the first 4 days, but you may lose 5 pounds on the 5th day. You may lose 1 and 1/2 pounds every two days until you reach your goal. 9. DRINK EIGHT 8oz GLASSES OF WATER EVERY DAY. 1/2 GALLON.

THIS DIET IS SAID TO BEEN GIVEN TO HEART PATIENTS NEEDING TO LOSE WEIGHT FAST FOR BY-PASS SURGERY. FALSE

"Heart diet" Not Affiliated With Hospital, Potentially Harmful

Question:

I am seeking information on the 3-day weight-loss diet developed at UAB hospital for cardiac patients who need to lose weight quickly. It's my understanding that the diet is 3 days on and 4 days off. Any information you can provide would be appreciated.

Answer:

This potentially harmful fad diet has been circulating for years under various titles, including the "Birmingham Heart Hospital Diet" and the "Cardiac Unit of UAB Hospital Diet," which implies that the diet plan is affiliated with UAB Hospital. Nothing could be further from the truth, yet we receive several requests for this "diet" a year.

The 1-page diet plan, which is followed for 3 days with no substitutions, promises a 10-pound weight loss. For the following 4 days, you return to your usual foods, and back on the diet for another 3 days, and so on. The diet claims you can lose up to 40 pounds in a month.

Foods listed on the diet include those of the healthy variety, such as broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, apples, and tuna fish, but it also includes high-fat foods, such as hot dogs, vanilla ice cream, and peanut butter, in abundance.

The diet has no basis in scientific fact for its claims. Registered dietitians point out, however, that since it includes only 1,200 calories, weight loss can occur, if you have been consuming about 1,800 calories or more each day before starting the diet. Also, should you drop 10 pounds in a week, you can rest assured you are primarily losing water and some muscle tissue but very little fat.

The diet is high in fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol - the main dietary culprits related to heart disease. It also is high in sodium and low in whole grains.

Furthermore, the diet is rigid with few food choices and seems to imply that there is a magical quality to the foods, timing of eating, and food combinations. It does not establish healthful eating habits to promote weight management for a healthy life. Additionally, the diet does not address exercise, an essential component of any effective weight management program.

This plan contradicts accepted nutritionally adequate and desirable weight-loss plans that emphasize a diet rich in whole grains, moderate in protein, and low in fat. And, nutrient needs for iron and calcium are lacking, among others.

Any time a diet promotes an unhealthy weight loss (more than 2 pounds a week) or eliminates certain food groups, be wary. Odds are it is not healthy, and any weight loss is bound to be short-lived.

As we have stressed over the 18 years we have published this column, the secret to losing weight is to ease into new eating and exercising habits you can stick with. Maintaining a balanced, low-fat diet (including eating five or more servings of vegetables and fruits a day), shedding excess pounds slowly, increasing your level of physical activity, and becoming aware of the cues that stimulate inappropriate eating are the keys to success.

I have done this diet and it works.  I lost about 7 pounds the first week, took off a week, then did again and lost 5 pounds.  My wife was doing this, and I was supporting her by doing it with her.

As for the tuna, here are some suggestions.  Spend the money and buy the premium Albacore tuna - DO NOT USE THE CHEAP 4-for-a-dollar TUNA.  The Albacore is not fishy tasting.  Eat the tuna ON the toast (day 1) and ON the crackers (day 2), and eat the tuna mixed with bitefuls of the beets or other things (dinner 3).  Use salt if you have to.  Be careful that you're getting tuna in WATER not in OIL.

As for other comments: unless indicated, foods are eaten as specified.  That is, NO BUNS FOR THE HOT DOGS, no mayo on the tuna, NO CHEATING AT ALL.  Use normal hot dogs, normal ice cream (not low-fat), normal cheese.  Your body needs the fat (yes, believe it or not).  I have taken a multivitamin and a calcium tablet daily with it, and suspect the calcium tablet (Tums) had sugar in it which made me lose 7 instead of 10 pounds.  Your body is a whorder - it will snatch any tiny extra calorie you give it, and convert it to fat while on this diet.

The grapefruit/PB combo on the first meal really "gets things going," if you know what I mean.  It's only the first day, though.

Also, please be aware, your mood might change during these three days.  When I get hungry, I get more snippy and short-tempered.  My body thinks I'm under duress, so it turns into survival mode.  In caveman days, the extra aggression would allow me more ability to catch food.  Anyhow, just a word of note.

Birmingham Alabama Cardiac Diet
I'm really wanting to try this diet! A friend at work did the diet for a month with being on for the 3 days and off for one day and she lost 40 pounds!!! I know, sounds unbelievable but she said she felt great the whole time and kept all of the weight off! She was not an extremely heavy woman to start out with, I would say maybe 180 and the diet still worked for her and got her down to 140! She gave me a copy of the actual diet and it is the same as edwardnortonfan's at the top of this page. And he is correct that you CANNOT substitute or change the diet in any way if you want the guaranteed results! I have a college graduation to go to this w/e and I'm hoping to lose atleast 5 lbs by Saturday. I'm starting tomorrow and I'll come back to let everyone know how it goes!

Im on the 3 day diet now and it DOES WORK. I tried this diet like 5 years ago and I lost 8 lbs in 3 days! I wouldnt subtitute to many things in the menu. There is alot of things on this diet I cant stand but I knew I had to stick to it if I wanted it to work. The only thing I changed was the tuna. It was just impossible for me to swallow dry tuna without gagging or throwing up so I switched the canned tuna for canned chicken. I compared the labels and everything is the same as far as nutrient information. I have kept everything else the same because its really hard to have so many subsitiutions and have the results you want. The canned chicken didnt make a difference at all. You should try your best getting the other things down if you really want results. I find it hard to believe anyone becoming sick if they continue the diet beyond 3 days. Its a very healthy diet. The only reason why they break it up like that is because your bodys metabolism will get use to the same foods your eatting over and over again and you wont lose the weight anymore. Allowing your body to have other things for a few days kind of puts everything in balance and with this balance your body will be more reseptive to losing the weight you want. I wouldnt go on binge eattings during the 4 days your off of it. You will never see results this way. Keep it low-fat. Eat non-fat yogurts, fruits and vegetables. Eat whole grain cereals with low-fat milk. Dont fry anything! Stay away from oils and fats. Im still eatting the canned chicken during lunch on the 4 days but I add alittle light mayo and onions, pickles, etc. I just wouldnt be making a mad dash to Mcdonalds or anything during those 4 days. Your still on a diet and trying to lose weight. The way I look at it is that you go from a 3 days severe diet to a 4 day serious diet. I wish everyone luck with this. I dont know how this works but it really works. You feel healthy and your losing the weight you want.

Edward Norton has the diet I had used before.  That was the thinnest I had ever gotten on a diet.  It really does work.  I am getting ready to start it tomorrow.  I had used the diet three years ago and it was great.  I live 10 min from the beach and after doing this diet I was not embarrased to wear a bikini.  Last year I did not go to the beach because I had gained so much weight from being busy and doing the fast food thing.  I have wanted to do this diet again because it worked but could not find it Thank you edward norton fan! I am graduating from college in 26 days and want to lose at least 20lbs. Tired of fat pictures!!! It is hard to stick to but the results are worth it.  Good Luck to all who try it!

I have been doing the "Birmingham Hospital Diet" for a few years now. I use it for emergencies only, because I have read that it is not healthy to leave so many calories out of your diet. It does work, though, and it's the only diet that has ever worked for me. This diet was supposedly used for cardiac patients who needed to quickly lose weight in prep for surgery. It is very important that you drink a whole lot of water, and you will, of course go to the bathroom a little more often, although it will not be like diarrhea. You do not have to do this one over the weekend, because it will not cause you to miss work.

I have used this diet many times and has lost anywhere from 30 to 80 pounds, dependig on what my goal is. this diet came with TRi-lite Diet pills.  It came on a nice printed card.  On the back of the card it listed substitutes and condiments allowed. The first time I used it I lost 80 pounds in 7 weeks. To keep from being so boring or eating foods that I don't like I used the substitutes on the back of the card. I am a cardiac Nurse in Birmingham, AL.  This diet has many names and believe me it is not a cardiac diet, but it works. I have used this diet for over 30 years.  Yes, you should drink 8 glasses of water a day.  I also walked briskly for an hour two or three times a week.

hello everyone, I read the first post and skimmed around.  I must say, I agree with you , John, I have lost 35 pounds in the last month, and now weigh 224, and that has been from joining karate and dancing all over the place, when I find myself standing still, I will start doing jumping jacks.  But back to what I was going to say, my grandfather told me of this diet, and it works really well!  The diet I have just finished, the orange, banana, boiled egg, hot dog diet, in which I have lost 15 pounds in 4 days.  This is a chemical diet, and shouldn't be done more than once a month.  It is where you eat 7 oranges on the first day (2 for breakfast, 2 for lunch, and 3 for dinner).  Then you eat 7 bananas on the second day (2 for breakfast, 2 for lunch, and 3 for dinner).  On the third day you eat 7 hard boiled eggs (you can have these with salt and pepper) (2 for breakfast, 2 for lunch, and 3 for dinner).  On the final day you eat 7 plain hotdogs, no buns or ketchup or anything,(2 for breakfast, 2 for lunch, and 3 for dinner).  You are allowed to drink water, and diet iced tea...

I REMEMBER IT AS THE "ORANGE, BANANA, HARD BOILED EGG, HOTDOG DIET". LOSE 10 - 15 LBS IN 4 DAYS. I HAVE DONE IT TWICE IN THE PAST. I AM DOING IT NOW WITH MY 16 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER (SHE IS SO EXCITED) we are on day 1.

DAY 1) 7 ORANGES (2 bf, 2 lun, 2 din)
DAY 2) 7 BANANAS (2 bf, 2 lun, 3 din)
DAY 3) 7 BOILED EGGS (2 bf, 2 lun, 3 din)
DAY 4) 7 HOTDOGS- no buns! (2 bf, 2 lun, 3 din)

drink water, unsweetened tea, black coffee, diet soda only.

It is supposed to be a 'chemical ' diet and should not be followed successively. If my memory serves me, You should break at least 2 weeks b4 doing it again.

I did the 3 day Birmingham diet and stuck with it,did not alter the diet in any way.
I weight 140# all my co workers were doing this diet so i thought I want to see if it really works.  To my surprise I lost 6# in the 3 days.
You can just go to the search engine on yahoo or google and type in 3 day diet or Birmingham three day cardiac diet and it will pop up.
Regardless of the diet u must combine exercise with it.
For weight loss it takes 3500 calories to make one pound.
To lose u must remove 3500 calories for each 3500 calories removed that is 1 pound lost.
For example:  if u weight 200 pounds add a zero to it or multiple your weight by 10
200 X 10 = 2000.  This person can eat 2000 calories per day and not can or lose weight.
if u want to lose subtract 500 calories per day- example: 2000 - 500 = 1500 so a 200 # person consuming 1500 calories per day would lose 1 pound per week.  500 X 7 = 3500 which is what 1 pound weighs. however if u walk 1/2 to 1 mile a day u can take off another pound per week.
In order to keep weight off, it is like a car
u fill up with gas but u drive the car and it runs out of gas because u aren't overfilling the tank so the gas is burnt up
Same as the human the body is the vehicle food consumption is the fuel.  U can't overfill the tank or it will spill over(store as fat) and u must burn it off (exercise) So u have to burn off more than u consume or take in.  U can binge and eat 3500 calories but you must burn off more in order not to gain.
Also check out foods with negative calories for example an apple may have 80 calories but to digest it it takes over a 100 calories to digest therefore u have taken calories off of what u already ate.
Try to discover why u over eat.  Some binge eat when stressed, lonely, angry etc theis cycle of binge eating is no different than how alcoholics binge drink- it is just a different substance.  But I know we have to have food to live however, don't live for food.  Just as alcohol kills the liver food does to- a diet high in fat causes fatty deposits on the liver resulting in the same liver disorder (cirrhosis) as seen in alcoholics.  Yes food is good, but FOOD also KILLS.  One of the most deadly diseases out there is diabetes-and obesity causes it, diabetes causes internal damage that u don't see on the outside til it is too late such as coronary artery disease, renal failure-kidneys shut down, blindness, slow wound healng, and when it is seen on the out damage has already occurred on the inside many must have stents in heart open heart surgery and it is fatal(death) people develop diabetic ulcers on their feet, end up having their toes amputated, feet, or legs amputated.
So following a diabetic diet you will lose weight and be healthier.  Because u will be removing sugar from diet and also fatty foods
fatty foods is the same as eating sugar it just turns to sugar when u eat it and your body ends up not being able to break it down well and it is stored as fat.  You do not have to be a diabetic to follow a diabetic diet but if u would like to lose weight and be healthy try a 1500 calorie diabetic diet and walk a mile a day start out with a fourth or half of a mile what ever u can tol if u can't walk far walk the length of ur hallway several times a day and ur endurance will increase!!!!!! Remember u have the power and control to do this!!!!!! Take back the power!!!!!!!  When u r getting ready to eat keep a journal, write down when u r getting ready to eat but first ask ur self am I hungry or is it an emotional need u r eating for this will help u get in touch with why u r eating if it isn't because u r hungry don't eat do something else such as walk, distract ur self from the food.
Be safe and I wish all of u the best.

I first tried the three day diet back in 2000 prior to my wedding. I lost almost forty pounds. Although I did do some exercising, I credit this diet for my weight loss because my weight hadn't budged much before, no matter how much I exercised.
Oh, you may not notice the weight loss until after the fourth or even the fifth day, so don't be discouraged.

Eggs on the next three days 3-6-9 and hot dogs on the last 3 days 3-6-9. Lot of fluids and break the diet for 2 weeks before doing it again.

I did this diet some years ago, for 3 weeks, and lost 30 lbs in the 3 weeks.  In my experience, men seem to lose more weight than women.  Some guys have tended to lose 10 lbs a week, while women tend to lose around 3 - 5 lbs a week.

Exercising while doing the diet is a serious plus, and can keep muscle loss to a minimum while flushing out unwanted fat.

NEVER go below 1200 calories per day!! To do so could mess up your metabolism for years to come. Or, if I can put this in terms that you will actually care about, it will make it harder for you to lose weight; when your body receives too few calories, it will start to store everything you do give it as fat, to save it up for the famine you're going through.

Just a word on the 3-day diet everyone is talking about.  I typically don't even take in 1000 calories a day.  For someone not trying to loose an enormous amount of weight I would have to say this won't work if you just want 5-10 lbs. to get "back to normal".  I work out a lot, however my daily calorie intake is below 1000, but it's not nutritious I must say.  I tried the "Okinowan Program" (book title), which believes you should incorp. a little of everything.  I decided to keep my daily intake at 600-800 calories.  I did so easily by incorp. negative calorie foods (foods that your body uses more energy to burn then calories are contained therein)  In doing so I remained satisfied and ate more healthfully.  I will know in the morning (4th day) as to whether or not the 3-day diet is an actual chemical diet because if I don't loose weight it is based on what the individuals in this forum stated about calories (under 1000).  I feel I've eaten more on this diet then usual.  Very uncomfortable, yet I figured if it were a "chemical breakdown" diet, it would be necessary.  Carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, tuna, and melon are all Negative Calorie foods, the rest are not so you can see my dilemma in wondering if it's chemical or negative calorie...I got the diet straight from the www.kinotox.com pages.

Lots of negativity, I think if something is going to be said it should be supportive, nothing helps an uncomfortable situation more than support by people in a similar situation. If we could handle portion control or balanced diets none of us would be doing the research that led us here. Not only that but several factors lead to weight gain and loss. As a person who has recovered from a terrible eating disorder I can assure you I can eat smaller portions all day and never lose weight. I have learned however that this diet does work if followed correctly (beets and mayo-less tuna and all). This diet was not designed just to get people thin, it is a clinical diet produced by Nutritionists for patients going into heart surgery. This should not be continued for longer than three days and you will need a 7-10 day rest. This break does not mean you go on the Cheeto's and fast food diet, common sense and the food pyramid will need to be your diet during these days. Helpful hints for your off days: try eating a vegetable or fruit with every meal, individual lunch-size apple sauce with breakfast, salad with dinner, green giant makes broccoli in low-fat butter in your freezer department. Water, Water, Water! A lot of weight retained is water weight, drinking water will help shed a few extra pounds and will reduce the cottage cheese hanging out on your thighs not to mention what is can do for your skin! Drink it with chipped ice, you actually burn calories by drinking ice water! Soda Pop is high in salt, if you insist on getting a pop fix try a caffeine free diet pop. Don't cut out all the foods you love, if you forbid yourself to eat ho-ho'seven though you love them you will eventually go on a binge and eat the whole box, probably while sitting in a dark kitchen at 1am, we have all done it. If you have been really good and gotten all of your daily recommended f &v go for the ho-ho, you deserve it, but don't let guilt get the best of you, if you feel bad take a short walk, it might not burn off all the calories but anything is better than finishing off the whole box because "I cheated anyways". It only takes 3 days to adjust to a life with out a salt shaker. Take 3 bites of your food before you automatically reach for the shaker, you will be surprised to see what food actually tastes like, the blandness you think you taste will go way- trust me. Carbs are not the enemy. Fast food tastes good, smells good, but is soooooo bad. Try to limit yourself to once a week if you are a fast food junkie. If time is the issue try the side garden salad with the low-fat dressing at Burger King. This salad come with yummy croutons and the dressing is Kens Steakhouse, yum. Not great but not sinful add a 5 piece chicken tender, no sauce on the side. I lost 35 pounds with old fashioned healthy eating during my pregnancy. I went into the hospital at 9 months pregnant 13 pounds lighter than I was before I was pregnant, when I left with my very healthy newborn I was almost 30 pounds lighter than 10 months prior. I took good care of myself for my child, I was NEVER sick with morning sickness(people ask all the time). I ate pizza when I wanted and pasta but also lots of fruit and veggies (I craved them). I recommend this style of eating for your off days, but the Cleveland clinic diet is great to help you get into that pair of jeans you can't quite sit down in! P.S. Another trick I learned is that if you eat your breakfast within an hour of waking up it will help jump start your metabolism!

I recently used the three day diet after the holidays because I am a wrestler.
It works very well, I only needed to 6 lbs., but i ended up losing about 12 because I exercise regularly exercise about twice a day. It works, you just have to stick to it, and I don't know about substituting but it is worth it if you are really trying to lose some pounds.

The 3 day hospital diet has NO links or affiliations with any hospital, medical unit, or any other medical profession company or association.  It is not used in hospitals any where in the world the National Association of Heart and Health has confirmed this and have been confirming this for 20 years, these diets will work but you will be losing water and muscle tissue and not fat as soon as you start eating again you will put the weight back on, THIS DIET IS DANGEROUS having all the different food groups in it does not make it healthy, it is high in saturated fat and sodium (salt).  I do not totally disagree with this diet it is a easy way of quick starting a better way of eating and using portion control IT WILL NOT WORK IF you substitute foods, and use your common sense- no you cant have buns with your hotdog no you cant have milk in you coffee and tea or sugar. This is not a creative diet it is dull and must be followed EXACTLY. This is the diet exactly as it must be followed. Again dont do this diet for longer than a week IT WILL MAKE YOU ILL, also if you have diebetis or think you might do not under any circumstances use it as it CAN INDUCE COMA. This will link you to the official statement by the British Heart Foundation about this diet http://www.health.uab.edu/show.asp?durki=63320&site=734&return=18687

Robyn's diet is the same exact diet that I have. I'm not sure if it's the one you're looking for but I know it really works great. The most you can usually lose is 10 pounds but you have to drink lots of water and you can only have salt and pepper moderately. I think they use this diet for people who are having surgery and needs to lose alot of weight really fast. Hope it works!!!

9 hot dogs a day? What the hell is wrong with you people? Just eat less and excercise and you will lose weight.  If you are so morbidly obese, shoving 9 hotdogs down your throat in one day will not solve your problems. I know this only because I was 750 pounds at one time in my life. I did the bacon, butter, and Sprite diet in 1986 and I lost 7 pounds. that was the best I ever managed. I tried the mango and pork diet in 1992 and I was hospitalized for 3 days due to severe hershey squirting. It was terrible. Good luck to all you fat asses and don't choke on all the hot dogs.

Eat nothing but what you love to eat and you will stay normal.
It is the dieting that causes you to gain weight. And eating things you don't really want because you think they are good for you.
Just eat what you love. When you start to grow tired of that, trust your intuition about what to eat next.
Always eat what you love. Don't worry if you can afford it or not. What is more important, you health or your pocket book?
I'd rather be low on cash and happy with my food than miserable with more money.
Eating what you really, really love will also keep you mentally satisfied and happy.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham disavows any connection to the hot dog diet.  Here is a quote from their website.

"The diet has no basis in scientific fact for its claims.

An earlier post refers to hot dogs being useful in breaking down foods rich in lumenides which are an amino acid. There is no word lumenide in the dictionary, and if you look at the 20 amino acids listed in wikipedia, there is not one called lumenide.  It seems like more research might be worthwhile...

I guess no one is still talking about this, but I've had and used this diet over the past 20 years when I felt I needed to lose weight.  It can definitely be difficult to stick to, but it does work if you can.  You really do get used to eating dramatically smaller portions so that on the forth day, the amount of food that would normally eat seems huge.  Also, I've found that if I eat the fruit included in each day's dinner as an afternoon snack I don't get quite as hungry.  I know it is not a sustainable lifestyle change, but it is a way that I'm comfortable with getting down to a healthier weight so that I can sustain with portion control.  When you start to see results from a diet quickly, it is so much easier to keep the motivation going.  Also, exercise and 8 glasses of water every day are absolutely necessary.

You're ALL WRONG!!!!!!!  The word is LOSE for Christ's sake, not LOOSE!!!  As in, "I will lose some weight" or "My clothing is loose after this diet."  Retards.

Hi Mary,

I have what is called "The Cleveland clinic Diet”
I lost 30 Lbs. in 40 Days It really does work.
I did not over do it on the 4 off days of “regular diet”
I kept the weight off for 5 years.
I have gained it all back again (Lack of exercise and poor eating habits) but starting Monday I am going back on this diet. I now need to loose 35 lbs.

This diet works on a chemical breakdown
Remember : It's only for 3 days. You can do it! If you must, take a 10 day break. Then go back & lose another 10 lbs. (results are faster if you do not take a break).

Breakfast
1 Grapefruit
1 Slice Toast
2 Tablespoons Peanut Butter
Tea or coffee (Black)

Lunch
1/2 cup Tuna
1 slice toast
coffee or tea (Black)

Dinner

1 Cup String Beans
1/2 Cup Beets

Is there a substitution for bananas because I allergic to them?  Years ago I tried the 3 day diet and it worked. I did lose 10 pounds but the bananas made me feel horrible.

3 day cardiac diet works (i tend to crave sugar a LOT after the 3 days however, repeat the diet 2 more times to help cure your craving for sugar), 4 day hot dog diet - never tried it, don't want to (i can not eat 9 bannanas in one day - boring), airforce diet???  never heard of it.

Hi all I found a copy of the "cleveland clinic diet" in my drawer and it is a long term diet.

CLEVELAND CLINIC DIET
IN 2 1/2 MONTHS YOU SHOULD LOSE62 POUNDS

Breakfast 1/2 grapefruit or 1/2 grapefruit juice{4oz unsweetened}
2 eggs any style
2 slices of bacon {preferable low sodium}

Lunch 1/2 grapefruit or 1/2 grapefruit juice
salad {any dressing} or vegetable {green}
meat any style any amount

Supper 1/2 grapefruit or 1/2 grapefruit juice
meat any style any amount
vegetables green or red cooked in butter or any seasoning

instructions:
1. At any meal you may eat until you are full, until you cannot eat any more.
2. Don't eleminate anything from the diet, especially dont skip bacon at breakfast or omit salads, it is the combination of foods that burn fat.
3. The grapefruit is important because it acts as a catalyst that starts the burning process.
4. cut down on coffee, it affects the insulin balance that hinders the burning process, try to limit to 1 cup at mealtime.
5. don't eat between meals- if you eat the combination of foods suggested you will not get hungry.
6. note: the diet completely eliminates sugars and starches which are lipids and form fats. fat does not form fat. it helps burn it so you can try foods in butter and use butter generously on vegeatables.
7. do not eat desserts, breads, and white vegetables or sweet potatoes, you may double or triple helpings of meat, salad, or vegetables, eat until you stuffed. the more you eat the more weight you will loose.
8. you can loose 10 pounds in 10 days there will be no lost the first 4 days. but you will lose 5 pounds o the 5th day. therefore you will lose 1 1/2 pounds every 2 days until you where you want to be.

This diet is given to heart patients needing to lose weight fast for bypass surgery.

all soft drinks need to be diet and caffeine free. drink lots of water

you may not have: white onions potatoes and celery

you may have: red onions, bell peppers, radishes, broccoli, green onion, spinach, leaf and lettuce, cabbage, tomotoes.

STAY ON THE DIET 12 DAYS AND STOP DIET FOR 2 DAYS AND THEN YOU CAN EAT ANYTHING YOU WANT. REPEAT THIS SCENNERION UNTIL YOU LOSE THE WEIGHT YOU WANT.

I have tried this diet many many times!! it does work, but only if you have the weight to lose! if you only have 5% body fat, you won't see the 10 lbs in a week like someone with 10%+ body fat.

I used it once or maybe twice a month just to keep up with my sugar addiction... and im proud to say im back down to the size i was when i was a junior in HS... (i can finally fit into all my old dresses and my cheerleading uniform)

You can have as much water, coffee, tea, and diet drinks.  only use sugar substitute though! I suggest you buy tuna in a can of water, and don't drain it. this helps it go down a little easier! and drink a lot of water.  it helps keep you feeling full since theres a severe lack of calories. it also helps quench you thirst and muscles so you can stay active longer than if you had the caffeine from coffee or tea or diet drinks.

this diet cover all the food groups, but it doesnt fullfill all of them, so don't go longer than 3 days, then eat as you usually would (for me lots of sugar and red meat) for at least 4 days.

I have pasted the diet i follow below.  if you are allowed to substitute it is listed.  otherwise don't do it! it'll mess it up because it's based on how the foods mix together with each other and your stomache acids! so beware if you stray!

****************************************************************************************

Supposedly, this 3 day diet is used at the Birmingham, Alabama Hospital
Cardiac Unit for patients who need to lose lots of weight in a hurry before having surgery. In 3 days you can lose as much as 10 pounds!

Dinner
2 Slices (3 oz.) of any Meat
1 cup String Beans
1 cup Carrots or Beets
1 small Apple
1 cup Vanilla Ice Cream

           Second Day

  Breakfast
1 hard-boiled Egg
1 Slice of Toast
1/2 Banana
Black Coffee or Tea

Lunch
1 cup Cottage Cheese
or: 1/2 cup Tuna
5 Saltine Crackers

Dinner
2 Wieners
1 cup Cabbage or Broccoli
1/2 cup Carrots
  or Turnip Greens
1/2 Banana
1 cup Vanilla Ice Cream

                  Third Day

Breakfast
1 hard-boiled Egg
1 Slice Toast
Black Coffee or Tea

Lunch
1 Slice Cheddar Cheese
5 Saltine Crackers

1 cup Carrots or Beets
1 cup Green Beans
  or Cauliflower

  or 1 small Apple

OR MAKE SUBSTITUTIONS TO THE DIET MENU!
* You are allowed diet soda or tea with sweetener on this diet.

No buns with the hot dogs.
Plain meat only!
No FRYING of eggs or any other menu items... THIS EATING PATTERN IS WHY WE GET FAT IN THE FIRST PLACE!  Butter, oils, salad dressings, cheeses; all other "fats" in general seem more satisfying to us, and really they are but for the WRONG reasons.  This is because our bodies take longer to break them down for nourishment and storage purposes. This makes us feel full longer because our digestive system stays busy longer. HOWEVER, it takes much longer to LOSE the additional weight gained from the incremental "over-supply" these fats burden into our bodies.  Why add more when you've made a commitment to lose?

True... eating non-fried eggs, tuna without its "salad" and broccoli without cheese is a boring process to take on, but it gives you a much-needed break right from the get-go with the 3-day (or any other) diet plan. Think of it as giving yourself a healthy break because that's EXACTLY what it is!

It is called the 3 day cardiac diet and it is used for pre-op cardiac surgery pts. It works on chemical breakdown and it really does work. Some suggestions- When you have the meal with toast, tuna, and cheese I take my toast put the tuna on it then the cheese and microwave it into a tuna melt and its not so dry. Same idea with the toast an peanut butter. What Im not sure of is can you drink coffee, tea and water all day.

I used the "Cleveland Clinic Diet" or 3 day diet approximately 13-15 years ago. It worked then! I only used it for a short time and I was younger. At that time in my life it seemed I could eat most anything I wanted and I would not gain weight once I went on a diet and exercise regimen.  Now I can't even seem to get on a diet or exercise regimen - for many reasons! Well, I am very overweight , unhappy, and lethargic now - unacceptable for the mommy of a 4 yr old. I will do this diet again starting tomorrow! And walk! Right now exercise is limited due to a leg/vein trauma in my right thigh. (And this has depressed me and I have been in bed for a week!
