I am not sure, but for Pitt Bulls a lot of excerise and a good diet is the best thing for them.  If you want them to be strong there are several different excercise roiutines you can find in training books. Pitt Bulls however are very muscular as it is.  Feeding them a dog food which contains lamb and rice.

my pet has been loosing weight despite feeding him twice a day.  we feed him about four cups in the morning and then again at night.  sometimes he gets extra from the dinner table.  I was wondering if you could tell me if he sounds like he has worms.

I suggest that you get your dog to the vet ASAP your buddy could be sick. It sounds like something serious like diabeties or Cancer I don't want to upset you but, if your dog is losing wieght like that you really need to get him/her checked out and fast!!!!!

Nurish-um Supplement...

I haven't tried it yet, but just ordered 6 tubes for my 10-year-old Schnoodle.  The product description says:

"A highly palatable and tasty food supplement especially formulated with attractive aniseed flavor for dogs. It will help your pet increase weight gain and stimulate appetite. Nurish-um is beneficial when your pet is not eating a sufficient quantity of food after illness or when recovering from surgery. Nurish-um provides a high vitamin supplement which makes your dog look and feel good. Great for use before showing to give dogs increased energy."

i give my do a calcium supplement and something called quinua and kiwicha. Their grains from south america which are incredibly high in protein and in vitamins. one of my dogos is 10 months old and weighs about 95 pounds, all muscle. Exercise is also very important for weight development.

Crystal, what kind of food are you feeding your pooch?  Four cups in the morning (I'm guessing a roughly equal amount in the evening?) sounds excessive to me.  My hundred pound dogs only need 3-3.5 cups a day.  Worms could be a possibility as well.  Your dog should probably be on a de-wormer anyway to prevent heartworm.

I also have a question in the same vein of this thread--the animal shelter where I volunteer has one dog who is very high energy and rapidly losing weight.  Three weeks ago, she was about 54 pounds.  Now she's down to 46.  Her ribs are visible (she's not emaciated, but she is too thin).  What types of things can she get that will help her put on some weight?

I have a dog that will not gain weight. I don't know how to get him to eat. The vet says he has been bitten by something cause there is knot on his neck and toxin in his blood. He also stated that he cant help the dog until it gains weight so he can actually have the stamina to make it through the test?  Does anyone know how to do that?

My dog is only a year and a half old and has been losing weight.  I've taken him to the vet, and spent about $800 worth of every test short of a biopsy, and they can't figure out what's wrong with him. Every test shows him to be in perfect health.  We changed to a really kickass expensive food, and that hasn't helped, either.
He is more than 20 lbs underweight, but he acts like he feels fine.  He is really energetic, but he always has been, and never used to have this problem. He had a parasite, Giardia, that started the initial weight loss.  They gave him medication, and he gained back some weight, and levelled out.  He has begun losing more weight again, and they have taken about 4 more stool samples, all of which have came up negative for parasites.
At this point, I can't afford to do more testing for a while, and he isn't acting sick, but I'm scared to death that if we don't figure it out soon, he's going to waste away to nothing.  The only thing I can think of as a temporary solution is some sort of weight gain supplement for dogs.  Is there one?

I was asking the same question about my pointers. I was told to go to the co-op and feed calf meal and feed to plump them up. Haven't tried but nothing (chicken, beef, pasta, oatmeal) seems to work..

macker, where can i get these grains you are talking about?

Crystal, the problem you are experiencing with the weight lose thing definitely sounds like worms. try worming the dog for two to three days or as needed after that than once every two to three months.

She also is current with all her dewormers and check-ups, but she dosent seem to gain any weight, and has lost more then normal this fall. She is a senior (9 years) and I am concerned about her.

I heard an interview and they had the author of Flight on, Quanta Bonta, who loves dogs and she was saying her dog was losing weight really fast and she used ENSURE, you get it in the drugstore. It's like a milkshake drink with loads of calories and vitamins. You can also put foods in the blender with vitamins and fish oil and feed your pet through a turkey baster like she did.
