I was wondering if anyone out there had any ideas to use instead of the unity candle?  My sister got married a few years ago at Christmas time and in place of the candles, she had three trees on the platform that each of the mother's tied a silver bow on the top of the two outer trees and then my sister and her husband took the inside parts of the bows and tied their own bow on the middle one and then cut the ends off, thus separating their bow from their parents' bows.  I am having a spring wedding and am having a hard time coming up w/ my own idea.  If anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them.  Thanks

I am having the same problem. I have heard of a few people using butterflies of different colors and also mixing colored sand together. I had thought up the idea of mixing powdered kool-aid-aid, sugar and the preacher adding water to "unite" the mixture. The mothers of both coming forward and stirring the kool-aid-aid and puring it into a glass. Then the couple drinking from the same glass. But then I also thought that would be really stupid.

My fiance and I are having a sand ceremony, especially appropriate because I'm from Hawaii and we've spent lots of time on beaches and he proposed to me on a beach in Washington (where we both live now).  We'll have two containers of sand, mine will be sand from Hawaii, his from Washington, and pour the two into one larger container.  I like it better than the candle because there's still the two distinct sands, but they're together and can never be separated (or blown out!)
