you use "a" if it's succeeded by an adjective that starts with consonant(all letters except a,e,i,o,u) and "an" if it's succeeded by an adjective that starts with vowel(a,e,i,o,u).
ans: " i think of him as an adorable, older man"

Kay's answer was not entirely complete. the consonant and vowel stuff is correct, but can't do without the following. it's not the spelling of the adjective that counts but the pronunciation of it. ex: the word "hour" starts with an h which is not pronounced. therefore hour is preceded by an. it can also be the other way around. university starts with a u but is pronounced as a y as in yogi. so that gives us a university.
