A person I work for has a memory of the earlier days of vi. He said that in those days if you had columns of words offset by tabs that he could move the cursor over several columns, use the l key to align the cursor and hit the i key to insert characters. This seems pretty straight forward to me. He goes on to mention that when the ESC key was pressed and he used the j key the cursor would revert to the original insertion point, and now it drops directly below that last character inserted.
What must be done to allow this user to have the older feature he wants where the insertion point in a column remains constant rather than dropping directly the last character that was entered prior to the ESC?
